Abstract

Abstract This study explores the presence and function of semantic metaphors in everyday WhatsApp conversations, drawing upon Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) developed by Lakoff and Johnson. It investigates how abstract domains such as emotions, relationships, identity, and social dynamics are expressed through metaphorical language in informal digital interactions. Utilizing a qualitative approach, the research analyzes chat data collected from real-life conversations, categorizing metaphors into structural, orientational, and ontological types. The findings reveal that metaphorical expressions are not only pervasive but serve significant cognitive and communicative functions. They help users express complex emotions, negotiate social relationships, simplify abstract concepts, and reflect cultural values. The analysis demonstrates that WhatsApp, as a platform for spontaneous digital discourse, offers rich insight into how metaphor shapes meaning in modern communication. The study also emphasizes that metaphors in digital language are not merely rhetorical flourishes but central tools of cognition, identity construction, and interpersonal expression in contemporary society.

Abstract

This paper originates from a student internship program conducted as part of the implementation of the Merdeka Mengajar Curriculum at SMP Swasta Cinta Rakyat 2 Pematangsiantar. The study aims to describe the internship experience and analyze how local wisdom is utilized to strengthen students’ literacy and numeracy skills. Drawing on classroom observations, documentation of learning activities, interviews, and daily reflective journals, the study demonstrates that Rumah Bolon and the traditional game Marsitekka function as effective pedagogical media for stimulating students’ understanding of space, symbols, patterns, and combinatorial reasoning. The findings indicate that the integration of local wisdom not only enhances students’ attention and participation but also enriches their numeracy thinking through contextual and enactive learning experiences. Rumah Bolon strengthens cultural literacy while deepening mathematical understanding, whereas Marsitekka provides space for students to develop strategies, logic, and problem-solving skills spontaneously. Overall, the internship program affirms that integrating local wisdom to enhance cognitive aspects of literacy and numeracy within the Merdeka Curriculum framework is essential for meaningful learning.

Abstract

This socialization activity on the introduction and benefits of the TOEFL function was conducted with the aim of enhancing the understanding of the students of SMA Swasta Teladan Pematangsiantar, particularly the eleventh-grade students, regarding the importance of the TOEFL test as one of the requirements in education and employment. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is an international standardized test that measures English language proficiency in four main skills: reading, listening, writing, and speaking. Unfortunately, many high school students still lack understanding about the function, format, and benefits of this test. Therefore, this socialization activity was designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to the concept of TOEFL, its test types (ITP, iBT, and CBT), question structure, and basic strategies for taking the test. Through material presentation, interactive discussions, and practice sessions, this activity is expected to motivate students to take English learning more seriously and to prepare themselves early. The results showed that students responded positively, with enthusiasm, and began to realize the importance of TOEFL as a valuable asset for their academic and professional future.
