Abstract

Synthetic dyes such as methylene blue (MB) are persistent pollutants that pose serious environmental risks due to their toxicity and resistance to biodegradation. This study investigates the development of sustainable photocatalysts derived from Areca catechu L. peel through hydrothermal carbonization, followed by activation, zeolite impregnation, and magnetic modification using Fe2+/Fe3+ ions. XRD and FTIR analyses confirmed the successful formation of Fe3O4, increased porosity, and the presence of functional groups that facilitate adsorption and photocatalytic activity. The results indicate that photodegradation is significantly more effective than adsorption, with magnetic hydrochar and hydrochar–zeolite composites achieving degradation efficiencies above 90%. Optimal performance was observed at a catalyst mass of 0.20 g and an irradiation time of 150 minutes. The high removal efficiency is attributed to synergistic interactions including pi-pi stacking, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic attraction between MB molecules and the modified hydrochar surface. Overall, this study demonstrates that Areca catechu L. peel waste can be valorized into an efficient, low-cost, and magnetically recoverable photocatalyst for dye-contaminated wastewater treatment

Abstract

Pengembangan katalis heterogen telah menjadi aspek penting dalam meningkatkan kinerja katalitik untuk berbagai reaksi kimia. Sebagai material anorganik berpori, kerangka logam-organik (metal-organic frameworks/MOF) muncul sebagai material pendukung untuk mengatasi masalah pemisahan katalis homogen seperti kompleks molibdenum bervalensi tinggi yang telah banyak digunakan untuk epoksidasi olefin. Metode yang digunakan dalam artikel ulasan ini adalah tinjauan pustaka naratif dengan pendekatan yang disederhanakan. Hasil ulasan artikel ini menunjukkan bahwa modifikasi kerangka logam-organik dengan kompleks molibdenum dapat dilakukan melalui sintesis satu tahap (one-pot synthesis) atau metode pasca-sintesis. Kerangka logam-organik berbasis zirkonium dan tembaga terutama dipilih karena sifatnya yang luar biasa sebagai material pendukung padat untuk kompleks molibdenum. Kedua metode modifikasi tersebut menghasilkan katalis dengan selektivitas dan konversi tinggi untuk epoksidasi olefin, seperti cis-siklooktena.

Abstract

This community service program aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of administrators, customers, and surrounding community members of KGS Waste Bank in Palembang in utilizing used cooking oil waste through the application of simple technology to produce liquid soap with practical and economic value. The activity was carried out using a socialization approach combined with training on the production of liquid soap from used cooking oil through a cold saponification process. Evaluation instruments consisted of pre-test and post-test assessments, which were subsequently analyzed descriptively. The results of the program showed an improvement in participants’ understanding of the liquid soap production process from used cooking oil, as indicated by an increase in the average score of 16.94 points in the post-test. This activity successfully opened opportunities for product diversification among the program partners and is expected, through this transfer of knowledge, to enrich the portfolio of recycled products they produce.
