Abstract

Myopia is the most common refractive error among school-aged children and a growing public health concern, particularly in developing countries. Although parental myopia is widely recognized as a genetic risk factor, evidence from Indonesia, especially among children aged 10 to 12 years, remains limited and inconsistent. By focusing on maternal myopia as a single and practical familial indicator in school-based settings, this study also considers a null association as a meaningful context-specific finding. This observational analytic study employed a cross-sectional design and was conducted from August to October 2025 in three public elementary schools in Karanggondang, Indonesia. A total of 88 child-mother pairs were recruited using purposive sampling. Visual acuity in both children and mothers was assessed using a Snellen chart without cycloplegic refraction. Refractive status was classified dichotomously as myopia or non-myopia. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Chi-square tests with Yates’ continuity correction, and associations were expressed as odds ratios with 95 percent confidence intervals. The prevalence of myopia was 20.5 percent among children and 59.1 percent among mothers. Childhood myopia was slightly more frequent among children of myopic mothers at 12.5 percent compared with 8.0 percent among those of non-myopic mothers. However, no statistically significant association was found between maternal myopia and childhood myopia, with a p value of 1.000. The estimated odds ratio was 1.12 with a 95 percent confidence interval of 0.385 to 3.209. Maternal myopia was not a significant independent predictor of myopia in children aged 10 to 12 years in this population. This context-specific null finding suggests that maternal myopia alone may have limited explanatory value. Preventive strategies should prioritize modifiable lifestyle factors alongside routine vision screening, and future studies should incorporate cycloplegic refraction and broader familial and environmental measures

Abstract

Intravenous (IV) insertion is a common invasive procedure in preschool children and frequently causes pain and distress because of limited developmental ability to understand and cope with the procedure. Effective non-pharmacological strategies are essential to reduce procedural pain and support atraumatic pediatric care. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of animated video distraction and storytelling in reducing pain during IV insertion among children aged 3-5 years. A quasi-experimental posttest-only design was conducted in the emergency department of a tertiary hospital. Thirty-two preschool children were recruited using purposive sampling and non-randomly allocated to an animated video group (n = 16) or a storytelling group (n = 16). Pain intensity during IV insertion was assessed using the Face, Legs, Activity, Cry, and Consolability (FLACC) scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk test, and the Mann-Whitney U test. Most children in both groups experienced moderate pain following intervention. The animated video group demonstrated a lower mean FLACC score (3.94) compared to the storytelling group (4.75). Statistical analysis revealed a significant difference in pain levels between the two interventions (Z = -2.015; p = 0.044; effect size r = 0.36), indicating greater effectiveness of animated video distraction. Both distraction methods reduced procedural pain, although animated video distraction was associated with significantly lower pain than storytelling in this single-site emergency department sample. These findings support the integration of audiovisual distraction into pediatric nursing practice to improve comfort and cooperation during IV insertion while future randomized studies are recommended to confirm these results.

Abstract

Children with special needs often experience social interaction difficulties that require structured, enjoyable, and developmentally appropriate stimulation. This community service program aimed to improve social interaction skills through interactive story time at SLB Bina Putra Salatiga. The program involved 26 students and 9 teachers through module development, media validation, teacher training, and four classroom implementation sessions. Content validity assessed by three experts showed a mean score of 0.93. Teachers’ knowledge increased from a mean score of 58.33 to 96.67. Active student engagement during the sessions reached 84.62%. The mean social interaction score increased from 21.12 to 26.03, representing a 23.32% improvement after the intervention. These findings indicate that interactive story time is a feasible and engaging social stimulation strategy and has good potential for continued implementation by the partner school.

Abstract

Background: Preschool children (3-6 years old) are vulnerable to hospitalization due to their developing immune systems, which can lead to high levels of anxiety due to new environments, traumatic medical procedures, and separation from parents. The prevalence of hospitalization anxiety reaches 70.8% in South Tangerang, hindering child care and development. Therefore, non-pharmacological interventions such as Islamic storytelling, which offers positive moral values and distraction, are necessary. Objective: To determine the effect of telling Islamic stories on the level of anxiety of preschool-aged children being treated in hospital. Methods: This study used a quantitative pre-experimental study with a one-group pretest-posttest design on 15 preschool children at Sari Asih Hospital in Ciputat, using purposive sampling. The Islamic storytelling intervention (10-15 minutes/day for 3 days) was measured using the 26-item parent-reported Preschool Anxiety Scale (PAS), analyzed by the Wilcoxon SPSS test with α=0.05. Results: Before the intervention, anxiety was mild in 3 respondents (20%), moderate in 8 respondents (53.3%), and severe in 4 respondents (26.7%). After the intervention, 3 respondents (20%) experienced mild anxiety, 12 respondents (80%), and 0 respondents (0%) experienced severe anxiety. The Wilcoxon test showed a significant difference (p=0.046 <0.05), with the majority of respondents aged 3 years (6%) being female, 9 respondents (60%), and 12 respondents (80%) having experienced hospitalization. Conclusion: Telling Islamic stories effectively reduces anxiety in preschool children during hospitalization.

Abstract

Background: Hospitalization in children can cause anxiety that negatively affects recovery and growth. One non-pharmacological intervention that may reduce anxiety is Qur’anic murottal therapy. This study aimed to examine the effect of listening to Surah Al-Ikhlas murottal on anxiety levels among hospitalized children in the Pediatric Ward of Sari Asih Karawaci Hospital. Methods: This quantitative study employed a one-group pretest–posttest design involving 38 children aged 6–12 years selected through accidental sampling. Anxiety levels were measured using the Indonesian version of the CSAS-C questionnaire before and after the intervention. The murottal therapy was administered for 20 minutes, twice daily for three days. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis and the Wilcoxon test. Results: Prior to the intervention, anxiety levels were predominantly classified as severe (36.8%). Following the intervention, anxiety levels decreased to a moderate level (44.7%). The Wilcoxon test indicated a significant difference in anxiety levels before and after the murottal therapy (p = 0.000). Conclusion: Listening to Surah Al-Ikhlas murottal therapy is effective in reducing anxiety among hospitalized children and may be recommended as a complementary non-pharmacological intervention in pediatric nursing care.
