Abstract

Orientalism is a field of study that developed within the Western academic tradition, focusing primarily on the Eastern world, including Islam, the Arabic language, and its culture. Since its inception, Orientalism has often been viewed negatively by Muslims due to its association with colonialism, political missions, and attempts at Western intellectual hegemony. Many Orientalist studies position Islam as an inferior, static, and problematic object of study, resulting in biased conclusions that contradict Muslim beliefs. This view is why Orientalism is often perceived as a threat to the authority and authenticity of the Islamic scholarly tradition. However, Orientalism cannot be viewed in a purely black-and-white manner as a wholly destructive phenomenon. Despite its accompanying ideological bias, a number of Orientalist studies have made significant contributions to the development of science, particularly in the fields of philology, textual criticism, Islamic intellectual history, and academic research methodology. Through the study of manuscripts, language, and history, Orientalists have helped open access to classical Islamic texts that have previously received little attention in modern scholarship. These contributions, although born from a Western epistemological framework, retain scientific value that can be utilized selectively. This study aims to examine the purpose of Orientalist studies and examine their utility for Muslims when approached critically and proportionately. The method used is a qualitative literature-based study, analyzing Orientalist works and the responses of Muslim scholars. The results of the study indicate that Orientalism, despite its inherent bias, can be a source of methodological enrichment for Islamic studies when deployed constructively. Therefore, Orientalism needs to be approached selectively, critically, and dialogically so that it can strengthen, rather than weaken, the Islamic intellectual tradition.

Abstract

Abstrack Orientalist studies of the Qur'an are a crucial discourse in the development of Islamic studies in the West, spanning from the Middle Ages to the modern era. Orientalists such as Ignaz Goldziher, Richard Bell, and W. Montgomery Watt have viewed the Qur'an through a historical-critical approach that positions the sacred text of Islam as a product of Arab history and culture. This approach often stems from epistemological assumptions that differ from the beliefs of Muslims, particularly regarding the concepts of revelation, prophecy, and the transmission of the Qur'anic text. Consequently, many of the conclusions reached contradict mainstream Islamic theological views. This article aims to analyze these orientalist views on the Qur'an and examine the critical responses of Muslim scholars and scholars. This research employs a qualitative method with a literature review approach, examining orientalist works as well as classical and contemporary Islamic literature. The results demonstrate that orientalism has indeed made significant contributions to the development of academic methodologies, such as textual criticism and historical analysis. However, on the other hand, many orientalist studies are considered to contain epistemological bias and theological reduction, because they ignore the transcendental dimension of the Quran as divine revelation. Muslim scholars and scholars have responded to this with methodological critiques based on Islamic scholarly traditions, such as the science of tafsir (interpretation), the science of the Quran, and the science of hadith. This critique affirms the authenticity of the Quran and the consistency of the transmission of revelation from the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to the present day. Therefore, this study emphasizes the importance of a critical and proportionate approach to orientalism, so that Quranic studies can continue to develop academically without losing their theological and spiritual foundations.

Abstract

Orientalist studies of the Qur’an constitute an important part of the history of Islamic studies in the West. Orientalist attention has not been limited to the content of the Qur’an alone, but has also focused on issues of translation, methodological approaches, and their impact on the development of modern Islamic studies. This article aims to critically analyze orientalist studies of the Qur’an by emphasizing three main aspects: the translation of the Qur’an into Western languages, the methodological characteristics employed by Orientalists, and the influence of these studies on Islamic scholarship, both in the Western academy and in the Muslim world. This research employs a qualitative method based on library research using a descriptive-analytical approach. The findings indicate that although Orientalism has made certain academic contributions, its studies are often shaped by epistemological assumptions that differ from the Islamic scholarly tradition, thus necessitating a critical and selective stance on the part of Muslim scholars.

Abstract

This article comprehensively examines the comparison between Muslim studies and Orientalist studies in Islamic studies, positioning them as two scholarly traditions with distinct characteristics, orientations, and academic implications. The main focus of the discussion includes the objects and perspectives of research, the methodologies and approaches used, and the impact and reactions of each tradition on the development of Islamic studies. Muslim studies depart from an internal (insider) perspective, grounded in a normative-faith foundation and utilizing the Qur'an and Sunnah as primary sources of knowledge. Within this framework, Islam is understood not only as an object of scientific study but also as a transcendent system of values and guidelines for life. In contrast, Orientalist studies developed within the Western academic tradition with an external (outsider) perspective, viewing Islam as a historical, social, and cultural phenomenon. The approaches used tend to be historical-critical, philological, and socio-humanities, with an emphasis on textual analysis, historical context, and the dynamics of Muslim society. Through a descriptive-analytical and comparative approach, this article demonstrates that Orientalist studies often draw criticism, particularly regarding colonial bias, normative reduction of meaning, and a tendency toward generalization. The results of this study demonstrate that the contributions of Orientalists to the development of scientific methodology, source criticism, and the expansion of Islamic studies literature cannot be ignored. Furthermore, Muslim studies play a strategic role in strengthening religious identity, maintaining the authority of Islamic sources, and encouraging a renewal of Islamic thought that is more contextual and responsive to the challenges of the times. By critically and proportionately bringing these two traditions together, this article emphasizes the importance of open, respectful, and civilized academic dialogue to enrich the treasury of contemporary Islamic studies.

Abstract

The phenomenon of joking roasting has increasingly appeared in student interactions as a form of humor, intimacy, and informal social control. However, this phenomenon raises academic concern because not all jokes are received positively, especially when they touch on physical appearance, family background, economic condition, or religion. This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of joking roasting among Hadith Studies students of the 2022 cohort at the Faculty of Ushuluddin and Islamic Studies, Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara, and to examine the limits of its permissibility and prohibition from the perspective of hadith. This research employed a qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation, then analyzed descriptively and interpretively by referring to hadiths concerning the prohibition of insulting, guarding the tongue, Muslim brotherhood, and joking ethics. The findings show that roasting is permissible when practiced within close friendships, based on mutual consent, without causing harm or touching sensitive matters. Conversely, roasting that degrades human dignity is considered blameworthy because it contradicts prophetic principles of brotherhood and verbal ethics. This study implies the need to strengthen communication ethics among students so that humor remains within Islamic ethical boundaries
