Abstract

Abstract: The transformation of Sekanak Market in Palembang reflects a shift from water-based to land-based activities due to riparian modernization. This change affects not only the market’s physical form but also its meaning, identity, and spatial attachment. Using a qualitative approach and the sense of place framework, this study explores how space, experience, and local culture interact. Data were obtained through interviews, observation, and visual documentation, and analyzed within three dimensions: place identity, place attachment, and place of community. Findings indicate that modernization has altered the market’s orientation to the river and reduced social interaction, yet riparian cultural values persist in collective memory and daily economic life. Integrating sense of place principles is essential to ensure that revitalized traditional markets preserve local identity and cultural continuity. Keyword: Riparian Culture, Sekanak Traditional Market, Sense of Place, Traditional Market Transformation Abstrak: Transformasi Pasar Sekanak di Palembang mencerminkan pergeseran orientasi masyarakat dari aktivitas air ke darat akibat modernisasi kawasan riparian. Perubahan ini tidak hanya berdampak pada bentuk fisik pasar, tetapi juga pada makna, identitas, dan keterikatan ruang masyarakat. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan kerangka sense of place untuk memahami hubungan antara ruang, pengalaman, dan budaya lokal. Analisis dilakukan melalui wawancara, observasi, dan dokumentasi visual berdasarkan tiga dimensi utama: place identity, place attachment, dan place of community. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa modernisasi pasar mengubah orientasi terhadap sungai dan pola interaksi sosial, namun nilai-nilai budaya riparian tetap hidup dalam memori kolektif dan aktivitas ekonomi. Integrasi prinsip sense of place menjadi penting dalam revitalisasi pasar tradisional agar kontinuitas identitas lokal tetap terjaga. Abstract

The Palembang Songket Museum occupies a limas house and brings textile heritage, domestic architecture, and museum functions into a single setting. This study examines how architectural form, spatial organisation, material expression, and documented cultural references are articulated in the museum setting. A qualitative single-case study was conducted in 2025 using non-participant observation, photographic documentation, spatial reading, available drawings, and a review of relevant literature and institutional sources. The analysis was organised into three dimensions: aesthetic-spatial characteristics, functional organisation, and sociocultural interpretation. The findings identify a raised-floor typology, layered roof form, timber-and-masonry construction, repeated openings, carved floral and geometric motifs, gold accents, and filtered daylight as prominent architectural characteristics. Functionally, the museum accommodates exhibition, collection-related activities, documentation, education, and small-scale commercial activity within a domestic-scale setting. The analysis also identifies constraints related to circulation, accessibility, environmental control, interpretive media, and collection documentation. Sociocultural interpretations are limited to relationships identified from architectural evidence and published literature; visitor perception and community attachment were not directly measured. The study shows how a vernacular house can provide a culturally specific architectural setting for the presentation of Palembang songket while also creating practical requirements for museum use.
