Abstract

The global movement toward sustainable food packaging is increasingly driven by environmental concerns related to excessive plastic waste and the reliance on petroleum-based polymers. Synthetic biopolymers such as polylactic acid (PLA), polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), and polybutylene succinate (PBS) have emerged as promising alternatives due to their biodegradability, renewability, and compatibility with conventional processing technologies. This article presents a comparative review of these three biopolymers, focusing on their chemical structures, synthesis pathways, mechanical and barrier properties, biodegradability, and environmental performance. The review also examines their practical applications in food packaging, highlighting the specific strengths of each material. Through a comprehensive evaluation of recent literature, this study aims to inform material scientists, food technologists, and packaging developers about the opportunities and challenges associated with the implementation of synthetic biopolymers in sustainable packaging systems. The findings indicate that, although each polymer offers distinct advantages, strategies such as material blending, structural modification, and effective end-of-life management are essential to optimize performance and reduce environmental impact. This review contributes to the growing body of knowledge supporting the development of next-generation biodegradable packaging solutions.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the entrepreneurial behaviors of MSME actors in the cassava processing sector in Padang City and their influence on business performance. A descriptive quantitative approach was employed, with data collected through interviews and a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire distributed to cassava processing entrepreneurs. The results indicate that individual factors such as education, experience, and motivation are categorized as high and positively contribute to entrepreneurial behavior. Environmental factors such as input availability, training, capital assistance, promotion, and the cohesiveness among entrepreneurs also support business performance, although challenges remain in extension services, marketing, and business regulations. Overall, the business performance of cassava processing MSMEs in Padang City is classified as high, as reflected in market expansion, increased income, and competitive advantage. The synergy between strong individual characteristics and optimal environmental support is key to enhancing the competitiveness and sustainability of cassava processing businesses in Padang City. Abstract

Community service activities play an important role in improving community capacity through the application of technology. This activity aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of members of UMKM Bundo Kanduang in Jorong Purwajaya, Nagari Sarilamak, Kecamatan Harau, Kabupaten Lima Puluh Kota in processing local food commodities, namely cassava and corn, to become more valued products. The methods used in this program included socialization, counseling, and hands-on training. The training materials covered the processing of corn sticks, cassava-based nugget-like products, mocaf flour, and corn donuts. This activity involved 18 participants and was conducted in several stages. The results showed an improvement in participants’ understanding of local food diversification as well as their technical skills in food processing. Participants were able to produce products with good characteristics, which indicates that they can produce them correctly. This activity also encouraged the use of local resources and opened opportunities for food-based businesses. Therefore, the application of simple food processing technology can be an effective strategy to increase the economic value of local commodities and support community empowerment.
