Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of religion in fostering tolerance and social harmony within the diverse community of Morotai Island Regency, North Maluku. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the research was conducted through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis involving religious leaders, educators, and interfaith communities. The findings reveal that religion functions not only as a system of spiritual belief but also as a social instrument that strengthens solidarity and social cohesion in a plural society. Religious practices in Morotai reflect a living form of “social religion,” where religious values are integrated with local wisdom such as pela gandong, deliberation, and mutual cooperation. Furthermore, education, media, and the role of religious figures are identified as key factors in reinforcing the social ecology of tolerance. The study concludes that harmony in Morotai is not accidental but a social construct rooted in inclusive religious values and sustained communal practices.

Abstract

Waqf is a socio-religious institution in Islam that plays a strategic role in developing the welfare of the community. This article analyzes waqf from a fiqh perspective using a comparative approach between schools of thought, covering the definition, legal basis, pillars, conditions, types, and differences of opinion among classical and contemporary scholars. This research uses a normative legal research method with a comparative-school approach and a conceptual approach. Through a study of the Qur'an, hadith, authorized fiqh books, contemporary fatwas, and laws and regulations, this study finds that differences in views between schools, especially regarding the ownership status of waqf assets, the permanence of waqf objects, and the permissibility of cash waqf, stem from differences in istinbath methodology. The findings indicate that the flexibility of waqf fiqh, particularly in the Hanafi and Maliki schools of thought, opens up space for innovation in productive waqf management in the modern era. This article recommends a revitalization of waqf fiqh that is responsive to contemporary challenges without abandoning the fundamental principles of sharia

Abstract

The Crusades were one of the most significant events in world history, taking place between 1095 and 1291 AD and involving prolonged conflicts between Christian Europe and the Islamic world. This study aims to analyze the historical background of the Crusades, the factors that triggered the conflicts, and their impacts on both the Islamic world and Europe. The study employed a library research method with a historical approach by examining various sources, including books, scholarly journals, and other relevant historical references. The findings indicate that the Crusades were not solely driven by religious motives, particularly the desire to reclaim Jerusalem as a holy city, but were also influenced by political and economic factors, such as the struggle for power and control over strategic trade routes. The Crusades took place in three major phases: the initial success of the Christian forces, the resurgence of the Muslim forces under the leadership of Nur al-Din Zangi and Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi (Saladin), and the final phase marked by the decline of the Crusader states. The conflict had significant consequences for both civilizations. The Islamic world experienced political, economic, and intellectual decline due to prolonged warfare, while Europe benefited from the transfer of knowledge, the expansion of trade, cultural exchange, and the emergence of the Renaissance, which marked the beginning of the revival of Western civilization.

Abstract

The Qur’anic and Hadith texts (nash) are the primary sources of Islamic law and hold significant authority in the lives of Muslims. However, understanding nash cannot rely solely on a textual approach, as these texts were revealed within specific linguistic, social, and historical contexts. This study aims to examine the methods of understanding nash from the perspective of ushul fiqh and their relevance to the development of contemporary Islamic law. The research employs a qualitative method with a library research approach through the analysis of classical and contemporary literature related to ushul fiqh and Islamic legal interpretation. The findings reveal that the methods of understanding nash include linguistic (lughawiyah), substantive (ma’nawiyah), and contextual approaches. The linguistic approach emphasizes the analysis of Arabic language structures, while the substantive approach focuses on the objectives of Islamic law (maqāṣid al-syarī‘ah). Meanwhile, the contextual approach seeks to relate the text to social realities so that Islamic law remains relevant to contemporary developments. This study concludes that the integration of these three approaches is essential to produce a comprehensive, moderate, and adaptive understanding of Islamic law without neglecting the fundamental principles of the Sharia.
