Abstract

This study investigates the reading comprehension exercises presented in the English on Target textbook published by Erlangga for Grade XI Indonesian senior high school students. Employing a descriptive qualitative research design, the study analyzes all reading passages and accompanying comprehension tasks across eight chapters of the textbook. Document analysis was used as the primary data collection technique, focusing on the cognitive demands of each reading question. Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy served as the analytical framework to categorize reading comprehension questions into lower-order and higher-order thinking skills, including remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, and evaluating. The findings reveal that the textbook addresses six major reading comprehension skills: identifying main ideas, locating specific information, understanding vocabulary in context, making inferences, identifying authorial purpose, and recognizing text organization. Literal comprehension tasks, particularly those requiring factual recall and identification of explicit information, dominate the early chapters. However, inferential and evaluative questions appear more frequently in later units, indicating a gradual progression toward higher-order thinking skills. In terms of exercise formats, five main types were identified: multiple-choice questions, vocabulary-based items, true/false and matching tasks, open-ended comprehension questions, and grammar-integrated reading activities. Multiple-choice exercises constitute the majority of tasks, while open-ended and evaluative questions are less frequent. Although the textbook demonstrates an effort to scaffold students’ reading development from basic comprehension to more complex cognitive engagement, lower-order thinking skills remain predominant. These findings suggest that teachers may need to supplement the textbook with additional inferential and evaluative reading activities to better support higher-order literacy development in Indonesian EFL classrooms. Abstract

This autoethnographic study examines the lived experiences of learning English for Academic Purposes (EAP) within the Language Academic Preparation Program (LAPP), a key component of the Program Persiapan Studi Lanjut (PPSL) at UIN Sultan Syarif Kasim Riau. Drawing upon personal reflections and research journals, the study investigates how culturally responsive pedagogy, local wisdom, and immersive experiences shape academic language development. By engaging in activities such as traditional ceremonies, local arts performances, culinary practices, and educational field visits, the program contextualized English learning in ways that enhanced learner engagement and reinforced cultural identity. The findings suggest that EAP instruction becomes more effective and transformative when it integrates local cultural content with authentic learning contexts. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that autoethnography provides a valuable lens for capturing the emotional, intellectual, and pedagogical dimensions of language education. The main contribution of this research lies in proposing an alternative model of EAP instruction that is not only academically rigorous but also culturally grounded, offering new insights for the development of contextually relevant language education programs in Indonesia and beyond.

Abstract

The library website serves as a digital gateway that reflects the institution’s knowledge identity and service quality. This study analyzes the role of user experience in shaping the academic knowledge image of the University of North Sumatra (USU) Library website. Using a qualitative phenomenological research approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with six informants, consisting of five active students as primary informants and one library staff member as a supporting informant. Data analysis followed the interactive Miles and Huberman model, emphasizing the interpretation of users’ lived experiences. The results reveal that user experience quality, which includes usability, accessibility, design appeal, information accuracy, and responsiveness, plays an important role in shaping how users perceive the library website as a representation of academic knowledge. Furthermore, the SERVQUAL dimensions—tangibles, reliability, responsiveness, assurance, and empathy—function as an interpretative framework that connect user satisfaction with knowledge dissemination. In conclusion, the USU Library website has largely succeeded in positioning itself as a digital symbol of knowledge; however, interface optimization and more intuitive navigation structures are still needed to enhance the overall user experience.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the narrative structure of fables written by students of MTs YP H. Datuk Abdullah, to compare male and female students’ narratives, and to analyze the influence of gender perspectives on story construction. The analysis framework employs Todorov’s (1971) narrative structure theory, consisting of five stages: equilibrium, disruption, recognition, repair, and new equilibrium. A descriptive qualitative method was used with 32 seventh-grade students (15 male and 17 female) selected purposively as the subjects. Data were collected through fable writing tasks and semi-structured interviews, and validated through methodological triangulation, peer debriefing, and member checking. The results show significant differences: the majority of male students (11 out of 15, 73%) produced concise, action-oriented narratives that went straight to the core of the story with a simplified Todorov structure, while 4 students (27%) wrote longer or slightly more reflective narratives. In contrast, the majority of female students (12 out of 17, 71%) produced longer, expressive, and reflective narratives, emphasizing social relationships, emotions, and moral values with a complete Todorov structure, while 5 students (29%) produced shorter or less reflective narratives. The synthesis indicates that male students tend to emphasize physical action and outcomes, whereas female students emphasize emotional reflection, social interaction, and moral messages. These findings have implications for developing gender-responsive narrative writing strategies, enabling teachers to adapt methods that optimize students’ cognitive and expressive abilities. Abstract

This study aims to reveal the types of language attitude employed by the online media outlet CNN Indonesia in reporting corruption cases in Indonesia and to analyze how ideological messages are represented through the use of such attitudes. The research adopts a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The analysis is conducted using the Appraisal theory, particularly the subsystem of attitude, which encompasses affect, judgement, and appreciation. The data consist of clauses containing evaluative attitudes drawn from 15 CNN Indonesia news texts on corruption cases published between January 1 and December 31, 2024. The data were collected through documentation, observation, and note-taking techniques, and analyzed using an interactive model. The findings indicate that the use of attitude is dominated by the judgment category (65%), particularly within the subcategory of propriety, which evaluates perpetrators of corruption as unethical, immoral, and irresponsible. Additionally, positive judgment is used to legitimize law enforcement agencies as professional and credible actors. The appreciation category (29%) is used to assess the social, economic, and ecological impacts of corruption. In comparison, affect (6.27%) is rarely applied and more frequently appears implicitly to reinforce the negative image of the perpetrators. These findings suggest that language attitude functions not only as a linguistic evaluative tool but also as an ideological strategy through which the media frames perpetrators as "public enemies" and strengthens the hegemony of anti-corruption discourse.
