Abstract

Smoking and alcohol consumption among productive-age adults represent major behavioral risk factors contributing to the rising burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including cardiovascular diseases, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and chronic respiratory disorders. This study aims to analyze behavioral patterns, determinants, and the health impacts of smoking and alcohol consumption among individuals aged 25–54 years. A descriptive qualitative method with an analytical literature study approach was employed, reviewing reputable scientific publications from 2015 to 2024. Findings indicate that smoking and alcohol consumption in productive-age populations are driven by workplace stress, social norms, cultural influences, and urban lifestyle shifts. The combination of both behaviors exponentially increases NCD risks through inflammatory mechanisms, oxidative stress, metabolic dysregulation, and organ damage. Social determinants such as economic pressure and mental health also contribute to sustained risky behaviors. This study recommends multi-level interventions including education, counseling, enhanced health literacy, workplace wellness programs, and public health policies such as increased tobacco taxation and alcohol access restrictions.

Abstract

Ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption has risen sharply among urban adolescents in Indonesia due to the modernization of food environments, digital media exposure, and lifestyle transitions. This study examines the relationship between UPF consumption and adolescent obesity using a PRISMA-guided Systematic Literature Review (SLR), synthesizing 58 eligible articles from an initial 612 publications. Findings indicate that UPF consumption is driven by high accessibility, low cost, pervasive digital marketing, obesogenic school environments, and socio-cultural preferences that normalize fast-food intake. Physiologically, UPFs are energy-dense, low in fiber, and contain additives and added sugars that impair appetite regulation, contributing to excessive caloric intake and adiposity. Behavioral mechanisms such as screen-time snacking, emotional eating, and peer influence further exacerbate weight gain risks. Moreover, urban food environments with dense concentrations of convenience stores and fast-food outlets restrict access to healthier options. The study concludes that reducing adolescent obesity requires multi-level strategies including UPF marketing regulations, healthy school food zoning, digital nutrition education, and structural improvements to urban food environments. These findings underscore the need for comprehensive interventions to reduce UPF consumption and enhance urban adolescent health outcomes in Indonesia

Abstract

Professionalism of medical record officers plays a strategic role in supporting the quality of primary health care services. Increasing administrative workload and the implementation of electronic medical records require not only formal qualifications but also effective time management and service quality. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between education level, training program, service quality, workload, and time efficiency with the professionalism of medical record administrative officers at Puskesmas Cempae. This study is a secondary analysis of data collected in 2009 at the medical record administrative unit of Puskesmas Cempae and re-analyzed in 2024 to assess its relevance within the current primary health care policy context. A total of 19 officers were included using total sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire that had passed validity and reliability testing. Data were analyzed using Fisher’s Exact Test with a 95% confidence level (α = 0.05). The findings showed that education level (p = 0.003), service quality (p = 0.008), and time efficiency (p = 0.023) were significantly associated with professionalism, while training programs did not show a statistically significant relationship (p = 0.057). Professionalism of medical record officers is influenced by formal education, quality of service delivery, and effective time management. Strengthening continuous education and operationally relevant training is essential to improve professionalism in primary healthcare administration.

Abstract

Pasung (physical restraint) among people with mental disorders remains a public health problem in Indonesia, particularly in areas with limited access to mental health services and low family knowledge regarding the care of people with mental disorders. Families, as the closest social environment, play an important role in the recovery process and in preventing the recurrence of pasung after release from restraint. This study aimed to analyze the informal roles of families in providing psychosocial support to prevent pasung among people with mental disorders after release from restraint in Soppeng Regency. This study used a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. Informants consisted of family members who had relatives with mental disorders after pasung as general informants and health workers as key informants selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation and analyzed using an interactive analysis model consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the informal roles of families in preventing pasung include acting as motivators, harmonizers, mediators, caregivers, connectors with health workers, and companions for people with mental disorders. These roles reflect family psychosocial support through meeting basic needs, providing emotional support, supervising medication, and facilitating access to health services. However, limited family knowledge and socio-cultural influences still affect treatment-seeking behavior. Strengthening family roles through mental health education and collaboration with health workers is therefore important to prevent pasung and support social rehabilitation in the community.

Abstract

Dengue hemorrhagic fever remains an important public health concern because of its potential to cause outbreaks and mortality. This study aimed to describe the spatial and demographic distribution of recorded dengue hemorrhagic fever cases in the Mangasa Community Health Center catchment area, Makassar City, from 2021 to 2024. The catchment area comprises Mangasa, Gunung Sari, and Mannuruki Urban Villages. This retrospective descriptive epidemiological study used secondary surveillance data. All recorded cases during the study period were included through total sampling, yielding 188 cases. Data were analyzed descriptively using frequencies, proportions, and cross-tabulations according to age group, sex, urban village, month, and year of occurrence. Monthly case distribution was presented using a line chart, while annual, demographic, and spatial distributions were summarized in tables. Spatial distribution across the three urban villages was visualized using Quantum GIS. The largest annual number of cases was recorded in 2021, with 87 cases, accounting for 46.3% of all cases. Females represented 54.3% of cases, while males represented 45.7%. The 6–17-year age group accounted for the largest proportion of cases at 41.5%. Gunung Sari and Mangasa Urban Villages each recorded 64 cases, while Mannuruki recorded 60 cases. Monthly case numbers fluctuated, with May contributing the largest overall proportion, although the peak month differed across years. Spatial distribution also varied annually, indicating that the urban village with the highest recorded number of cases was not consistent throughout the study period. These findings describe variations in recorded case distribution and should not be interpreted as differences in incidence or population risk because population denominators and non-case data were unavailable. The findings may support local surveillance and geographically targeted dengue prevention activities within the Mangasa Community Health Center catchment area.
