Abstract

This community service program aimed to improve students' understanding of moral values and to strengthen their character through story-based learning. The program was carried out at SMAN 8 Padang, targeting ninth-grade students through training in story analysis using a critical narrative analysis approach. A participatory action approach was applied in the form of interactive workshops and Focus Group Discussions (FGD), with the training materials focused on narrative texts, the identification of moral values, and the reinforcement of characters' traits. The results show that students were able to identify the moral values embedded in the stories, particularly honesty, responsibility, cooperation, and empathy, and to relate them to their everyday lives. The activity also encouraged students to think more critically in evaluating the moral consequences of the characters' actions. These findings indicate that story-based moral value analysis training is an effective learning strategy to support the Character Education Strengthening (Penguatan Pendidikan Karakter) program in secondary schools.

Abstract

Students' ability to understand Job Vacancy materials remains a challenge in English language learning due to limited vocabulary mastery, insufficient understanding of text structure, and low confidence in identifying information related to the workplace. This condition encouraged the implementation of a Community Service Program in the form of Job Vacancy training for twelfth-grade students at SMA Pembangunan Padang. The program aimed to improve students' English proficiency through interactive learning activities. The methods included needs assessment, material presentation using PowerPoint, videos, and visual media, group discussions, educational games, practice in analyzing job vacancy advertisements, and end-of-program evaluation. The results showed that students actively participated throughout the training, demonstrated higher enthusiasm during learning activities, and improved their ability to identify essential elements of Job Vacancy texts. The program also created a more engaging learning environment and increased students' motivation to learn English. Therefore, interactive Job Vacancy training can serve as an effective community service strategy to support the improvement of English language competence among senior high school students.

Abstract

Reading comprehension is an essential skill in English language learning because it enables students to understand, interpret, and obtain information from written texts. Despite its importance, many students still encounter difficulties in comprehending descriptive texts, particularly in identifying key information and understanding the meaning conveyed in a text. This study aimed to analyze the reading comprehension ability of the eleventh-grade students of SMA Ekasakti Padang in comprehending descriptive texts and to identify their difficulties based on six reading comprehension indicators proposed by Brown (2004), namely identifying the main idea, finding supporting details, understanding vocabulary, making inferences, recognizing references, and finding specific information. This study employed a descriptive quantitative research design. The population consisted of 15 eleventh-grade students of SMA Ekasakti Padang in the 2025/2026 academic year, while eight students of Class XI F2 were selected as the sample using purposive sampling. The research instrument was a 40-item multiple-choice reading comprehension test. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics by calculating students' scores, percentages, and mean scores. The findings revealed that the students obtained a mean score of 51.25, which was categorized as Fair. Among the six indicators, students achieved the highest score in recognizing references, while the lowest achievement was found in finding supporting details. The results indicate that students still experienced difficulties in understanding explicit and implicit information in descriptive texts due to limited vocabulary mastery and inadequate reading comprehension strategies. Therefore, English teachers are encouraged to apply effective reading strategies and provide intensive vocabulary instruction to improve students' reading comprehension ability.
