Abstract

National Park is an area of natural conservation that having indigenous ecosystem managed with zonation system and can be utilized for education, research, crop development and recreation. This concept seems still to be the most suitable technique for biodiversity conservation, and can be applied in Indonesia, where the high biodiversity richness taken place. Mount Lawu and surrounding areas are ideal location to be developed in to National Park. This is due to all criteria needed such as: the width was mare than 10.000 ha, the natural ecosystem and endemic species are still existing, having ancient sites, spiritual and aesthetic value; having typical physiography and physiognomy, as well as the high chance of developing tourism industries. Jobolarangan area is a natural ecosystem that represents the whole ecosystem and problems of Lawu Mountains. This area having quite high diversity and richness consisted of plants, animals and microbes. That development of National Park at Mount Lawu need to be supported by the formation of biodiversity conservation centers, i.e. botanical garden, wild live sanctuary, agro-tourism park, etc., so that becomes an integrated biodiversity conservation area.© 2001 Jurusan Biologi FMIPA UNS SurakartaKey words: biodiversity, Jobolarangan, mount Lawu

Abstract

The objectives of the research were to make: (1) a list of Spermatophyte plants at Jobolarangan forest in mount Lawu, and (2) the ecological and the economical benefits of the plants. All Spermatophyte plants on the forest were studied. The research procedures were including species collection in the field, make up herbaria, morphological observations in the laboratory, and interview to residents and government administrations. The results showed that in the forest were found 142 species Spermatophyte plants, in which 126 species of 54 family were identified, consisting of 78 species of herbs, 26 species of bushes, and 21 species of trees. Ecological benefits of the plants were hydrological regulation, keep out landslide and erosions etc., however economical benefits of the plants were log, firewood, charcoal, honey bee, medicinal plants, etc.© 2001 Jurusan Biologi FMIPA UNS SurakartaKey words: biodiversity, Spermatophyte plants, Jobolarangan forest, mount Lawu.

Abstract

Zingiber is profitable for spice, ingredients, medicine and garnishing plant (Purseglove, 1972). The systematic ofZingiber (and other Zingiberaceae) has been argued among the authors, because they commonly use the morphological and the anatomical characters, that they obtain limited data. The chemical constituents of volatile oils are one of the most prospective characters for taxonomy of Zingiber. This research is objected to find out (1) the constituents of volatile oils (2) the number and the type of compounds composing volatile and (3) the genetic relationship. This research is done in the laboratory. The data seeking covers, i.e. (1) water distillation (Guenther, 1948; Anon, 1977), (2) extraction (Anon, 1977; Harborne, 1984), and gas chromatography (Mc Nair & Bonelli, 1968;Pramono, 1988). Dendrogram is arranged referring to Sokal & Sneath (1963), and the association coefficient degrees are determined referring to Pielou (1984). The rhizomes are gathered from Bogor Botanical Garden and from around Surakarta. There are seven achieved species, namely Z. amaricans Nor., Z. aromaticum Val., Z. cassumunar Roxb.,Z. gramineum Bl., Z. officinale Roxb., Z. ottensii Val., and Z. zerumbet (L.) J.E. Smith. Every species is identified referring to manuals of Backer & Bakhuizen van den Brink (1968), Holttum (1950) and Burkill (1935). The volatile contents of seven species subsequently are 4.67% (ml/100gr.), 5.00%, 6.33%, 0.20%, 6.67%, 4.29% and 6.00%. The numbers of composing volatile compounds subsequently are 30, 26, 37, 44, 29, 29 and 29. The genetic relationships of seven species are Z. amaricans, Z. aromaticum and Z. zerumbet joint at similarity index of 90, and it is followed by Z. ottensii at similarity index of 85. Then those five species join with Z. cassumunar and Z. gramineum at similarity index of 60. Abstract

The objectives of the research were to make: (1) a list of Cryptogamic plants at Jobolarangan forest in mount Lawu,and (2) the actual condition of biodiversity conservation of the plants. All Cryptogamic plants on the forest were studied. The procedures of data collection were including species collection in the field, make up herbaria, observation of flora vegetation using transect method, morphology observation in the laboratory, and interview to residents and government administrations. The results showed that in the forest were found 77 species Cryptogamic plants, consisting of 27 species of fungi, 5 species of lichens, 20 species of Bryophyta and 25 species of Pterydophyta. Abstract

The aims of the research were to know the existence of the Nepenthes at mount Merbabu, variations of its morphology, associated plants, and ecological conditions. Nepenthes are one of plants that were categorized as conserved plant by Indonesian government as indicated in PPRI No. 7/1999. Many researchers attracted to study this unique plant since it’s distinct feature and the way to get nutrient by trapping insects at its sac. Samples were taken randomly along the path for climbing from Selo, Boyolali to the top of the mountain between April to May 2000. The results show that the plants were found at the altitude of around 1500 to 2000 tsl. There were two forms of the sacs, long and short at the same individual plants. The plants grow coiling on Myristica trees and shrubs of Thunbergia fragrans Roxb., and also could grow at the stoned-soil.© 2000 Jurusan Biologi FMIPA UNS SurakartaKey words: Nepenthes, morphology, ecology

Abstract

Plankton, an aquatic biota, often used as an indicator of water quality. The objectives of the research were to know: (1) diversity of both phyto- and zooplankton at Jabung swamp, East Java; (2) water quality at the swamp, and (3) diversity of fish that act as primary consumer of the plankton. Field sampling procedures were done at the swamp, followed with identification and data analysis at laboratory. Sampling locations were at the inlet, pools in the swamp and at the outlet. Sample were taken triplicate at each location between September and November, 1999 using a plankton net, while fish data were collected by interview and direct observation at the field. Thirty-one species of plankton were found in this research consisting of 17 species of phytoplankton and 14 species of zooplankton. The results of the plankton analysis indicate that Jabung swamp categorizes as moderately polluted at the inlet, polluted free at the pools inside the swamp, and lightly polluted at the outlet. Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out the variability of morphological characters of genus Ipomoea, including coefficient variance and phylogenetic relationships. Genus Ipomoea has been identified consisting of four species i.e.Ipomoea crassicaulis Rob, Ipomoea aquatica Forsk., Ipomoea reptans Poir and Ipomoea leari. Four species of the genus took from surround the lake inside the campus of Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta. Comparison of species variability was based on the variance coefficient of vegetative and generative morphological characters. The vegetative characters observed were roots, steams and leaves, while the generative characters observed were flowers, fruits, and seeds. Phylogenetic relationship was determined by clustering association coefficient. Coefficient variance analysis of vegetative and generative morphological characters resulted in several groups based on the degree of variability i.e. low, enough, high, very high or none. The phylogenetic relationship showed that Ipomoea aquatica Forsk. and Ipomoea reptans Poir. have higher degree of phylogenetic than Ipomoea leari and Ipomoea crassicaulis Rob.© 2000 Jurusan Biologi FMIPA UNS SurakartaKey words: Ipomoea, morphological characters, coefficient variance, phylogenetic relationships

Abstract

The objective of the study was to know the taxonomic structure of the genus of Zingiber based on cytological characters such as ratio of number, shape and size of chromosome. Zingiber specimens were mainly from Bogorbotanical garden. There were seven species studied, Z. amaricans Nor., Z. aromaticum Val., Z. cassumunar Roxb., Z.gramineum Bl., Z. officinale Roxb., Z. ottensii Val. and Z. zerumbet (L.) J.E. Smith. Z. officinale (local name: Jahe)consinsting of 4 varieties, big ginger (jahe gajah), red ginger (jahe merah), small ginger (jahe emprit) and blue-darkbrowny ginger (jahe wulung). Species identification was based on the literature such as of Backer and Bakhuizen van den Brink (1968), Holttum (1950), and Burkill (1935). Semi permanent squash method using acetoorcein dye was used to prepare the sample (Darnaedi, 1991; Okada, 1981; Robert and Short, 1979). The results of the study indicate that the number of chromosomes of all species studied were the same, 2n=32. The length size of the first chromosome pair was about 2μm. The shape of the chromosomes was mostly metacentric. Length and shape of each pair of chromosomes were hard to be determined accurately using this method, so that the chromosomal karyotype map unable to be constructed in this study. Abstract

The objectives of the research were to know: (1) the diversity of epiphyte species at the stand of puspa trees (Schimawallichii (D.C.) Korth.) in Cemoro Sewu and Cemoro Kandang of mount Lawu, and (2) the distribution and cover abundance of the species based on its location from the land surface. The research objects were all species of epiphyte plants on the stand of puspa trees. The procedures of data collection were including species collection in the field, make up herbariums, observation of epiphyte vegetation using transect method and morphology observation in the laboratory. The results show that in the south slope of the mount Lawu were found 23 species of epiphyte consisting 4 species of lichenes, 2 species of Fungi, 3 species of Bryophyte, 10 species of Pterydophyte, 2 species of Orchidaceae and 2 species of liana. The species with the highest density was Bryophyte, and the highest diversity was Pterydophyte.
