Biodiversitas 19: 1334-1346. The Outer Baduy people heavily depend on swidden cultivation for subsistence. They grow rice in the uplands every year based on their calendar. The cropping calendar and calendar of social events are often closely interlinked. There is also traditional wisdom for conservation of land and forest such as the zonation for land use system. The Outer Baduy swidden land productivity is mainly determined by the time period of forest fallow relative to that of the crops. The long-term success of the Outer Baduy swidden cultivation depends on how well the fallow period restores or maintain soil fertility. The aim of this research was to study the local knowledge of Outer Baduy of soil categories and soil fertility and the management of soil fertility in their traditional practice of swidden cultivation. The method used in this study was the qualitative one, applying observation and in-depth interviews to collect the primary data. In addition, soil analysis was conducted by the Laboratory of Soil, Faculty of Agriculture, Padjadjaran University, Sumedang, Indonesia. The results of this study showed that the soils are classified by the Outer Baduy based on color, water content, stoniness or rock parent material, and humus content. To maintain soil fertility in the swidden cultivation, the Outer Baduy people have developed some strategies, such as determining appropriate fallow time period, applying zero tillage, and planting legume crops in both the swidden fields and the fallow land. Traditionally, because the Outer Baduy are forbidden to use inorganic fertilizers, the length of fallow period and kind of vegetation succession have an important role in maintaining soil fertility.

Abstract. Irawan B, Partasasmita R, Rahayu N, Setiawati T, Iskandar J. 2019. Indigenous knowledge of bamboos by Naga community, Tasikmalaya District, West Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 1423-1434. Naga community is recognized as one of Sundanese traditional groups who reside in Neglasari village, Salawu Subdistrict, Tasikmalaya District, West Java Province, Indonesia. This community has been holding firm customs and culture. For daily needs, they take advantage of plant diversity around their homes, including bamboo. The aim of this study was to investigate the diversity (species and variations/landraces), utilization and management of bamboo among Naga community. The method used in this study was mixed method by combining qualitative and quantitative data collection with ethnobotany approach used in ethnobotanical studies. Semi-structured or deep interview, structured interviews, and participant observation method were used to collect data in the field. The result of study showed that there were 7 species and landraces of bamboos, namely Bambusa vulgaris Schard ex Wendl. var. vulgaris (haur hejo), Bambusa vulgaris Schard ex Wendl. var. striata (Lodd. ex Lindley) Gamble (haur koneng), Gigantochloa apus (J.A. & J.H. Schult) Kurz. (awi tali), Gigantochloa pseudoarundinacea (Steud) Widjaja (awi gede/awi gombong), Gigantochloa atter (Hassk) Kurz. (awi temen), Gigantochloa atroviolacea Widjaja (awi hideung) and Schizostachyum iraten Steud (awi tamiyang) were documented and used in the gardens of Naga communities. Bamboos are traditionally used as building materials, woven for container, traditional musical instruments, equipment for cooking, agricultural and livestock tools, foodstuffs, and others. Bamboo plants in the garden have been traditionally managed which consists of land preparation, planting, maintenance, pest control, harvesting, and utilization. The conservation of bamboos has been traditionally done by Naga community, including selective cutting of bamboo trees instead of clear-cutting, and keeping the bamboos garden not being converted to other land uses.

The development of coffee cultivation in the traditional agroforestry of mixed-garden (dukuh lembur) to provide social-economic benefit for the Outer Baduy Community, South Banten, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 2958-2969. The Baduy community who resides in the Village of Kanekes, the Sub-district of Leuwidamar, the District of Lebak, South Banten has maintained the Sundanese tradition, particularly in practicing swidden farming (ngahuma). They practice swidden farming based on Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and belief. According to the Baduy tradition, the commercial plants, including coffee, clove, cacao, teak, and rubber have been prohibited to cultivate in Baduy area. However, because the population has increased rapidly and market economy has intensively penetrated the Baduy area, some commercial plants, including robusta coffee (Coffea canephora Pierre ex A. Froehner) have been introduced by the outer Baduy community. The objective of this study was to elucidate the traditional practice of the Outer Baduy in cultivating coffee trees that are integrated into the traditional agroforestry of mixed-garden (dukuh lembur or leuweung lembur). This study used qualitative method with some techniques of collecting data, including observation, participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and plant survey in the sample plots of the dukuh lembur. The results of the study showed that in 1980-s the robusta coffee plants were introduced by some Outer Baduy people and have since been planted in the dukuh lembur. In the past, because coffee was prohibited to be cultivated in Baduy area, the coffee trees were regularly cut during the purification of the Baduy tradition (pembersihan adat). Nowadays, however, the robusta coffee trees have been properly integrated into the existing dukuh lembur which is based on hybrid knowledge of TEK and scientific Western knowledge. The Outer Baduy coffee farming system has provided subsistence as a well commercial economy that may support the sustainability of the Outer Baduy swidden cultivation that is considered as the cultural identity of the Baduy community.

Abstract. Mulyanto D, Iskandar J, Gunawan R, Partasasmita R. 2019. Ethnoornithology: Identification of bird names mentioned in Kakawin R?m?yana, a 9th-century Javanese poem (Java, Indonesia). Biodiversitas 20: 3213-3222. Birds have played an important role in Javanese culture for a long time. For example, birds have been culturally used as sources of folk stories, myths, illustrated old manuscripts, paintings on relief walls of temples, and inspiration of writers to make poems. This article presents the results of an ethnoornithology study that tried to identify all bird names mentioned in Kakawin R?m?yana (KR), an old Javanese poem, using a qualitative method, mainly interpreting KR text based on an ethnoornithological approach. The results showed that 84 bird names are mentioned in the Kakawin R?m?yana, belonging to 26 families, and 17 orders. The birds mentioned in KR are predominantly residents, some are regular visitors or vagrant, and only a few are absent. The orders whose members appear most often are Passeriformes (18), Columbiformes (7), Pelecaniformes (6), Ciconiiformes (5), and Cuculiformes (5). There are only 13 names which are Sanskrit in origin. Based on this study, it can be inferred that birds have played an important role in Javanese culture.

Abstract. Partasasmita R, Cahyani NT, Iskandar J. 2020. Local knowledge of the community in Cintaratu Village, Pangandaran, Indonesia on traditional landscapes for sustainable land management. Biodiversitas 21: 3606-3616.  Cintaratu, a village in Parigi Sub-district, Pangandaran District, West Java province, Indonesia has various landscapes. The recent developments of the community reflect a shift in values towards the attainment of economic prosperity. However, scaling-up the use of landscapes in this capacity can cause negative impacts. A cultural approach to landscape management can assist the village community in identifying sustainable practices. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the community's knowledge of the variety of traditional landscapes that exist in Cintaratu Village and the historical influence on variations in the landscapes. The qualitative method was applied in this study. The result of the study showed that some landscapes, i.e., leuweung karamat (sacred forest), kebon (garden), sawah (rice field), astana (grave/ tomb), pamukiman (residential area), pekarangan (homegarden), walungan (river), solokan (small river), tampian (bathing and washing place for residents), and balong (fish pond) are documented in Cintaratu Village. On the basis of ecological history, it has been revealed that village community’s behaviors have changed various landscapes in Cintaratu Village. Conservation efforts carried out by the people themselves towards the traditional landscapes are usually associated with a customary prohibition or pamali that develops in the village community. The local people of Cintaratu recognize various landscapes that can be classified as natural and cultural landscapes. Based on the information provided by informants, the village landscape changes can be traced from the 1780s to 2019. The history of these landscape changes is the result of various factors, including an increase in population density, the implementation of government policies, and market economic development in the village.

Characterization and identification of three thermophilic Bacillus strains isolated from Domas Crater, Mt. Tangkuban Perahu, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 3444-3453. A community of thermophiles within the hot spring of Domas Crater, Mount Tangkuban West Java, has been cultivated and identified based on the 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequence. The hot spring has a temperature of 45°C-76 °C, pH 1-2, the isolate has been cultivated in Thermus medium at a temperature of 70 and pH 6. The three isolated strains were L61A, TS61A, and D41A identified based on the 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequence refer to the GenBank database and all of them belong to the Phylum Firmicutes, which are clustered within the taxonomic groups of Bacillus, the Bacillus, and Geobacillus genera. Nucleotide sequences were compared for homology with BLASTN search at the NCBI Web-site revealed that strains (L61A) had 99.93% similarity with Geobacillus uzenensis. TS61A strain has a 99.24% similarity with Bacillus wiedmannii. Whereas D41A has 99.79% similarity with Bacillus paramycoides. The characterization also includes the phenotypic and biochemical of strains. The bacillus genera were known as a source of thermostable enzymes, plant growth-promoting, probiotics, decomposers of various polysaccharide materials, and bioremediation.

Abstract. Asmara IY, Garnida D, Partasasmita R. 2020. Short Communication: Duration and volume of crowing of Pelung chickens of West Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 748-752. Pelung are long crowing chickens originally from West Java Province, Indonesia. The chickens are raised as singing birds due to their beautiful crowing capability. Nowadays, the chickens are distributed not only in West Java, Indonesia but also in other provinces in Indonesia because of the existence of Pelung contests. The contests evaluate singing ability of Pelung chickens and are important promotion media for the birds. In contests, crowing characteristics such as duration and intensity are important factors to determine the quality of chickens. Some factors such as age, body weight, and body morphometrics are assumed to influence crowing characteristics. The study was aimed to determine crowing duration and volume in Pelung roosters, as well as correlations of age, body weight and body morphometrics with crowing characteristics. A survey was performed to collect data involving 73 birds in two areas in West Java Province. The research locations are Cianjur and Sukabumi Districts. The results showed that roosters in all areas have similar crowing durations, while their crowing intensities are varied. The study also found that age and body weight, as well as some body-morphometries, have strong correlations with crowing characteristics. The research provides empirical evidence of factors determining vocal performance of Pelung chickens. However, more samples from different areas are required to support these findings. In addition, research on management systems, health status and participation of chickens in rehearsal is needed in the future.

Asmara IY, Widjastuti T, Setiawan I, Abun, Partasasmita P. 2018. The growth performances and the gut health parameters of Sentul chickens supplemented with various dosage of turmeric powder. Nusantara Bioscience 10: 121-125. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different levels of turmeric powder (0, 1, 2, 3 g/kg) on production performance and the number of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria in the intestine of Sentul chickens. The results showed that addition of 3 g/kg of turmeric powder to diet significantly reduced feed intake (FI) and improved feed conversion ratio (FCR) of Sentul Chickens aged 9-16 weeks. The birds fed with control diet had the highest number of S. aureus and E. coli, while the birds fed with the diets added with 2 and 3 g/kg turmeric powder had the lowest number of bacteria. The study reveals that increasing levels of turmeric powder in diets had positive effects on bird’s performance and the number of intestinal bacteria. It can be concluded that a level of 3 g/kg turmeric powder in diets gave the best result due to significantly improved FCR.
