Habitat condition and landscape composition are the main factors that shape biodiversity in agroecosystems. However, information on the effect of habitat conditions and landscape composition on biodiversity in agroforestry systems is lacking. Agroforestry systems possess habitats that are characterized by a high diversity of vegetation, that can support biodiversity both on the field or landscape scale. This research aimed to study the diversity and species composition of ants in coffee (Coffea spp.) agroforestry systems, and to investigate the effects of habitat conditions and landscape composition on ant communities. Field research was conducted in twelve coffee agroforestry systems in East Java, Indonesia. Ants were sampled with the fogging method for canopy ants and pitfall traps for ground-dwelling ants in 40 m x 30 m plots. In each location, habitat conditions aspects (such as cultural technique and tree age) were identified by interviews with farmers and vegetation observation. Meanwhile, landscape composition was characterized by ground checking and mapping the land-use type within a 500 m radius from plot centers. This research recorded 35 species and 4,622 individuals of ants from all coffee plantations. Dolichoderus thoracicus was the most dominant canopy ant, while Pheidole sp.2 was the most dominant ground-dwelling ant in all plantations. Based on the GLM analysis, different responses were found between canopy and ground-dwelling ants in relation to habitat conditions and landscape composition. Canopy and ground-dwelling ants were affected by habitat conditions (such as tree age and canopy cover). The species composition of ground-dwelling ants was also affected by habitat conditions. In conclusion, habitats in coffee plantations can affect ant communities with ground-dwelling ants being more sensitive than canopy ants. Meanwhile, landscape composition can affect the species richness of all ants and not affect each stratum (canopy and ground-dwelling ants).

Local and landscape effects on the abundance and diversity of soil arthropods in citrus orchards of Malang and Batu, East Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 25: 3920-3927. Soil arthropods are crucial for sustaining the balance and function of agroecosystems. This study aimed to assess the diversity and abundance of detritivorous and predatory soil arthropods across various citrus orchards that differ in agroecosystem management practices and landscape composition. The study was conducted in nine citrus orchards from November 2023 to January 2024, with soil arthropod samples collected using Berlese funnels. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to evaluate the effects of management practices (local effects) on soil arthropod diversity and abundance, while Generalized Linear Model (GLM) analysis was employed to assess the effects of landscape composition (landscape effects) on soil arthropod diversity and abundance. Meanwhile, Analysis of Similarity (ANOSIM) based on the Bray-Curtis index was used to evaluate differences in soil arthropod composition. A total of 1,562 individuals were collected, representing 16 families, 11 orders, and 3 classes. Among the predatory groups, the most abundant family was Laelapidae, while Entomobryidae was the most dominant among detritivores. The diversity of both predatory and detritivorous arthropods was not influenced by variations in management practices. However, the abundance and composition of predatory arthropods were influenced by the frequency of organic fertilizer application, while detritivores were affected by weeding treatments. At the landscape scale, predator abundance positively correlated with the number of natural habitat patches and the area of citrus orchards. In contrast, detritivores were not influenced by landscape variables. This study highlights the critical roles of land management practices and landscape composition in shaping the abundance and diversity of soil arthropods.

Biodiversitas 26: 2079-2087. Apple production in Indonesia faces significant challenges due to pests, particularly fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae). Recently, management strategies for controlling fruit flies in apple orchards have often overlooked the influence of local and landscape-level factors. The objective of this study is to investigate how these factors affect fruit fly population densities in apple orchard. Research was conducted in nine apple orchards in East Java, Indonesia. For each orchard, the landscape was characterized by manual digitization the area within a 500 m radius from the center of the plot. To sample fruit flies, attractant traps were used along with rearing symptomatic fruits. Three species of fruit flies were identified in the apple orchards, with Bactrocera carambolae and B. dorsalis being the most abundant. In contrast, B. umbrosa was found only in one research site. Using Generalized Linear Model (GLM) analysis, it was determined that local factors, such as the frequency of pesticide application and canopy cover), as well as landscape factors, including class area and the number of patches of semi-natural habitats and apple orchards, influenced the population density of B. carambolae. On the other hand, B. dorsalis was only affected by a landscape factor, specifically class area of semi-natural habitats. Spatial variation of B. carambolae within the apple orchards was also influenced by a local factor (canopy cover) and a landscape factor (class area of semi-natural habitats). However, B. dorsalis was not affected by either type of factor. These findings emphasize the importance of understanding local and landscape factors to develop effective management strategies for different species of fruit flies in apple orchards.
