Abstract

This study assessed live coral cover and coral genus diversity across Karanrang Island, Balang Lompo Island, Badi Island, and Lumu-Lumu Island. Data collection was conducted at 12 observation stations (depth ±5 m) using the Underwater Photo Transect (UPT) method in April 2025. Photo analysis with CPCe 4.1 software was used to calculate the percentage of live coral cover, while the diversity index was calculated using the Shannon-Wiener formula (H’). The findings revealed that Badi Island exhibited the highest live coral cover (32.31–45.03%), whereas Lumu-Lumu Island demonstrated the lowest condition (10.60–24.97%). The highest diversity index was recorded on Balang Lompo Island (H' = 2.53) and the lowest on Karanrang Island (H' = 0.83). Badi Island is predominantly composed of Porites sp. and Acropora sp., suggesting ecosystem stability and a high potential for regeneration, while Karanrang and Balang Lompo Islands display moderate conditions with a prevalence of adaptive massive corals. These results show variations in coral cover and diversity between islands due to differences in environmental pressures and the ecological characteristics specific. These findings emphasize the need for location-based management to maintain the ecological functions and restoration potential of coral reefs ecosystem in the Spermonde Islands.

Nutritional profile suggests similarity to Gracilaria changii.   Abstract The growing industrial demand for agar underscores the need for efficient, sustainable extraction methods that ensure both high yield and product quality. However, optimizing key processing parameters for agar extraction from farmed Gracilaria sp. remains a challenge due to variations in species composition, cultivation environment, and extraction practices. Current production often relies on empirical or non-standardized conditions, leading to inconsistencies in gel strength, color, and purity that affect industrial applicability. This study examines the properties of agar extracted from an unidentified Gracilaria species, with characteristics closely matching Gracilaria changii. Using different NaOH concentrations (3%, 5%, 7%) and temperatures (70°C, 80°C, 90°C), the effects on agar yield, gel strength, color, water retention capacity (WRC), and structure were analyzed. The highest agar yield (13.54%) was obtained at 90°C with 7% NaOH, while the best gel strength (49.53 g/cm²) was recorded at 80°C under the same alkali concentration. FTIR confirmed polysaccharide features but revealed degradation at higher temperatures. Overall, 7% NaOH was identified as the optimal alkali concentration, balancing high yield and desirable gel properties. These findings offer valuable insights for enhancing agar extraction efficiency from Gracilaria sp. and advancing standardization in industrial agar production.

Abstract

Information on short-term variation in phytoplankton and zooplankton assemblages in tropical seaweed farming environments is still limited. This study aimed to characterize the taxonomic composition, abundance, diversity and weekly spatial patterns of phytoplankton and zooplankton along a nearshore-seaweed farm-offshore gradient in Galesong, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Sampling was carried out once a week for six consecutive weeks at three permanent stations representing nearshore waters, active Kappaphycus alvarezii farm and offshore waters. Samples were analyzed by means of Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW) interpolation to determine the microscopic identification, ecological indices and spatial distribution mapping. The total number of phytoplankton taxa was 10 and the assemblage was dominated by the diatoms Chaetoceros sp. and Leptocylindrus sp. The phytoplankton abundance was always higher than the zooplankton abundance and the Shannon–Wiener diversity ranged from 1.67 to 1.99. Five zooplankton taxa were recorded with unidentified crustaceans, Tintinnopsis sp. and Balanus larvae being numerically dominant. Zooplankton Shannon-Wiener diversity ranged from 1.02 to 1.09. The offshore station had highest total abundance in Weeks 1–3, the nearshore station had highest values in Weeks 4–6, and the seaweed-farm station did not show a consistently unique pattern of abundance or diversity. This pattern suggests that environmental variability may cause redistribution of plankton assemblages, although the mechanisms were not directly tested in this study. These results offer a preliminary baseline of phytoplankton and zooplankton assemblages in the region of study. Future studies should incorporate greater spatial and seasonal sampling and environmental measurements to better understand factors influencing plankton variability.

Abstract

This study evaluated the suitability of dissolved inorganic nitrogen relative to marine water quality standards, described horizontal distribution patterns, and examined links with non nutrient physicochemical parameters in the coastal waters of Galesong, Takalar. Sampling in April to May 2025 covered five stations representing nearshore, seaweed farming areas, and more open waters. In situ measurements included temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, and salinity, and laboratory analyses quantified ammonium and nitrate with a spectrophotometer. Environmental conditions were within ranges favorable for seaweed growth. Ammonium was not detected at any station, while nitrate ranged from 0.017 to 0.023 mg L⁻¹, below the Government Regulation No. 22 of 2021 threshold of 0.06 mg L⁻¹. Spatial mapping showed higher nitrate concentrations at non farming stations, while the lower concentrations within farming areas indicate nitrogen uptake by cultivated seaweeds. Theese findings suggest that Galesong Waters remain suitable for seaweed aquaculture, provide that nutrient conditions are monitored regularly to prevent potential nutrient deficits that could reduce cultivation productivity.

Abstract

Polusi plastik merupakan masalah global yang berdampak signifikan terhadap lingkungan perairan, termasuk ekosistem air tawar. Mikroplastik (MP), partikel plastik berukuran <5 mm, dapat berasal dari sumber primer maupun sekunder, dan berpotensi terakumulasi dalam tubuh organisme akuatik. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengidentifikasi keberadaan, karakteristik morfologi, dan jenis polimer mikroplastik pada ikan Betok (Anabas testudineus) yang dijual di Pasar Bauntung, Banjarbaru, Kalimantan Selatan. Sampel ikan dianalisis melalui proses pembedahan saluran pencernaan, digesti jaringan menggunakan larutan KOH 10%, dan observasi partikel di bawah mikroskop stereo, dilanjutkan dengan analisis polimer menggunakan Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya dua partikel mikroplastik berbentuk line (serat) berwarna biru, berukuran 1,894 mm dan 2,469 mm. Analisis FTIR mengidentifikasi polimer polyester (PS) sebagai komposisi utama. Temuan ini mengindikasikan paparan mikroplastik pada ikan air tawar yang berpotensi berasal dari serat tekstil sintetis, limbah domestik, atau aktivitas perikanan, serta berimplikasi terhadap kesehatan ekosistem dan potensi risiko pada manusia melalui rantai makanan. Ikan Betok berpotensi digunakan sebagai bioindikator pencemaran mikroplastik di perairan tawar, sekaligus menegaskan pentingnya peningkatan pengelolaan limbah dan pemantauan kualitas perairan secara berkelanjutan.
