Abstract

This study aims to identify character values embedded in the folktales of Pelalawan and to design a locally grounded instructional model to strengthen students’ character education. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed. The researchers analyzed two folktales, “The Golden Chain from the Riverbed” and “The Tale of the Sacred Ketobong” collected through documentary sources. Interactive content analysis was used as the analytical technique. Findings reveal character values such as simplicity, sincerity, humility, responsibility, and adherence to moral norms. The study concludes that folktales hold significant potential as effective educational media in Indonesian language and literature instruction, offering a contextual approach to character formation among students.

Abstract

Conventional news text instruction often neglects oral communicative competence, prioritizing written analysis over speaking performance. This study investigates the effectiveness of integrating Project-Based Learning (PjBL) with authentic news video production to enhance seventh-grade students' speaking skills within the Merdeka Curriculum. Employing a qualitative case study design, data were collected through methodological triangulation comprising limited participatory observation, semi-structured in-depth interviews, supportive questionnaires, and documentary analysis of student scripts and video products within a coastal-region SMP. Analysis followed Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña's interactive model through iterative cycles of data reduction, display, and conclusion verification. Findings revealed that 70 percent of students demonstrated enhanced comprehension of news text structure through functional internalization of 5W+1H elements and the inverted pyramid principle during rigorous scriptwriting. Learning motivation increased by 65 percent, attributed to the authentic experience of "becoming real reporters" that conferred social meaning upon academic tasks. Findings indicate that transforming video from passive input to active speaking output significantly improved students' fluency, confidence, and paralinguistic awareness through the 'authentic audience effect.' However, critical analysis reveals that high-stakes performance exacerbated speaking anxiety for marginal learners, necessitating differentiated scaffolding. The study concludes that authentic video production fosters 'performative multiliteracies,' shifting literacy from consumption to embodied public performance. These insights offer educators a critical framework for designing equitable speaking interventions that balance technological innovation with psychological safety.

Abstract

Syntactic competence is foundational to children’s literacy development; however, empirical research on how elementary learners construct sentences in response to specific interrogative prompts remains limited in Indonesian linguistic scholarship. Although prior studies have normatively described canonical sentence patterns or assessed general syntactic complexity, few have investigated the structural variations elicited by different question words. This study describes and analyzes the syntactic variations produced by fourth-grade students in response to five Indonesian interrogatives (where, how, who, why, what) and maps these responses onto the six canonical sentence patterns of Indonesian. Using a qualitative descriptive design and content analysis, the study examined students’ written responses to a narrative reading comprehension task. Each answer was parsed for syntactic function and evaluated against the framework of Standard Indonesian Grammar. Trustworthiness was ensured through thick description and inter-analyst triangulation. The findings reveal that each interrogative elicits a distinct range of syntactic realizations: full, elliptical, and compound with why producing the most elaborate, multi-clausal constructions. All observed variations align systematically with the six canonical patterns, indicating that ellipsis functions as a pragmatically motivated strategy rather than a syntactic deficiency. This study enriches the descriptive understanding of Indonesian child syntax and provides a diagnostic tool for elementary language instruction.
