Abstract

This study analyzes the methods used by English teachers in assessing speaking skills in current blended and digital learning environments. The focus is on the variety of speaking assessment strategies adapted to suit post-pandemic educational settings, including both face-to-face and online learning models. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through structured interviews with ten secondary school English teachers. The findings highlight the integration of technology in speaking assessments, the challenges faced, and the benefits experienced by teachers. This study aims to provide insights into effective speaking assessment practices suitable for modern classrooms.

Abstract

This research analyzed the illocutionary speech acts and its function found in the presentation of Abdullah Azwar Anas in Kick Andy TV show. This research aims at describing kinds and functions of speech acts based on the theory emerged by Yule. This research is descriptive qualitative analysis. The data was obtained from video on YouTube and the presentation was transcribed. The data then selected and identified based on the speech act classification. The result of the analysis showed: (a) there were five types of speech act found in the presentation, namely: representative/ assertive, expressive, directive, commissive, and declarative. (b) the most frequent type of speech was representative/ assertive. (c) the functions of the speech act found in Anas’ presentation were to express opinions, give information, give orders either directly or indirectly, and say gratitude and blessing.

Abstract

Many of Primary schools in Banyuwangi don’t have adequate number of English teachers, so they prefer to give English subject by classroom teachers. Regarding this, classroom teachers don’t have educational English background. It affected the learning process in classroom, especially classroom interaction. The study was conducted to find out the types of teacher talk produced during classroom interaction and students’ responses toward it.  The method used in this research is descriptive case study.  The results of the study were the most type that frequently produced by the teacher was giving information (21.7%) in direct influence and praising or encouraging (15%) in indirect influence.  Then, the results of students’ responses, it showed that 6 out of 10 types of teacher talk could be responded well by the students.  Hopefully, these results would give a great contribution to the enrichment of the classroom interaction by teacher talk and students’ responses.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the representation of social actors in the coverage of the “Policewoman Burns Husband” case published by the online news outlets Kompas.com and Liputan6.com using Theo van Leeuwen’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the study analyzes how meaning is constructed in news discourse through strategies of exclusion and inclusion, particularly in the forms of activation and passivation of social actors. The data consist of online news articles published between June and August 2024. The findings reveal that Kompas.com tends to represent the perpetrator as an active and personalized social actor through explicit identification and the use of emotionally charged narratives, thereby positioning the individual at the center of the discourse. In contrast, Liputan6.com predominantly employs passive and impersonal constructions by emphasizing legal-formal aspects and the role of law enforcement institutions, while downplaying the emotional dimensions of individual actors. These differences in representational strategies reflect distinct media ideologies and social constructions in framing the same event, highlighting the role of media discursive practices in shaping public perceptions of social actors and power relations in cases of domestic violence.
