Abstract

This study examines the early development and modernization of Islamic education in the Ottoman Empire and Andalusia, focusing on educational institutions, curricula, teaching methods, and socio-political contexts. Islamic education in both regions displayed diverse practices through formal institutions such as madrasahs, Rüşdye Mektebi, ribāṭ, and informal settings like mosques and tekkes. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with literature and historical document analysis, including primary sources such as Evliya Çelebi’s Seyahatname and biographical accounts of intellectuals like al-Yuḥānisī, and secondary sources comprising scholarly articles and books on classical Islamic education. Findings indicate that the Ottoman education system emphasized structured curricula and early modern schools, while Andalusian education integrated religious and rational sciences with experiential learning such as riḥla (educational travel). Both regions benefited from financial support (waqf), social stability, and the role of intellectuals, although access for women and marginalized groups remained limited. The study underscores the relevance of classical Islamic educational models for contemporary education, highlighting the integration of formal and non-formal learning, multidiscipline curricula, and attention to socio-economic factors. These findings offer insights for modern Islamic educational practices aiming for holistic, inclusive, and contextual learning experiences.

Abstract

This study examines the development of Islamic education during the Umayyad and Abbasid Dynasties, which demonstrate distinct orientations, characteristics, and contributions to the advancement of Islamic knowledge. The main problem addressed in this study concerns how both dynasties developed educational systems that differed in structure yet remained interconnected in shaping the intellectual tradition of Islamic civilization. The purpose of this research is to describe the forms of educational institutions, learning methods, and the advancement of knowledge in each dynasty, as well as to analyze the factors that influenced these developments. This research employs a library research method by analyzing primary and secondary sources, including historical texts, academic books, and scientific articles related to Islamic educational history. Content analysis was used to categorize data into themes such as educational development, governmental policy, and scholarly contributions. The validity of the data was strengthened through source triangulation to ensure accuracy and consistency. The findings reveal that the Umayyad Dynasty laid the fundamental groundwork for Islamic education through traditional institutions such as kuttab, halaqah, and study circles that focused on teaching the Qur’an, Hadith, and Arabic language. Meanwhile, the Abbasid Dynasty elevated Islamic education to its golden age by establishing madrasahs, major libraries, observatories, and the House of Wisdom, which served as a center for translation and scientific development. This study concludes that the development of Islamic education during both dynasties represents an evolutionary and interconnected process that significantly contributed to the advancement of Islamic civilization.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how Islamic education shaped social construction during the time of the Prophet Muhammad and the Caliphs. This study uses a library research method and data analysis was conducted using the theory of Huberman and Miles, which consists of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study indicate that Islamic education is a social construction formed through ongoing social, cultural, and spiritual interactions, which then shape social reality. The process of forming this social reality occurs through interaction and dialectics with three main stages from Berger and Luckman’s theory, namely externalization, objectivation, and internalization. Thus, Islamic education during the time of the Prophet Muhammad and the Caliphs was not only a process of knowledge transfer, but also a transformative force that succeeded in creating and institutionalizing a new social order, values, and norms in society.
