Abstract

Pollination is important in cashew production, thus it is important to understand the factor determining the presence of pollination in cashew habitat. The research was carried out by field surveys in cashew farms to record the insects that exhibited nectar and pollen foraging activities on wild and cashew flowers. This study recorded the similarity between flower-insect visitors on wild plants and cashews, namely families of Apidae, Halictidae, Pieridae, and Andrenidae. Apidae were the most important flower visitors, but the honey bee, Apis sp. as an important pollinator, did not show the highest abundance. Wild flowering plants in cashew fields have the potential to play a role in the conservation of cashew pollinators.

Abstract

Abstract

Green grass jelly shrub is a plant that has various benefits, so market demand for this plant continues to increase every year. On the other hand, the production of green grass jelly shrub has decreased so the market demand for this plant cannot be met. This study aims to determine the interaction between the dose of mycorrhiza and palm fiber biochar composition on the physiological activity of green grass jelly shrubs. Research with experimental methods was conducted in Greenhouse, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sebelas Maret, June-October 2023. The method used was a two-factor randomized complete block design (RCBD) and 3 replicates. The first factor was the dose of mycorrhizal fertilizer (0, 5, 10, and 15 g plant-1) and the composition of planting media [soil (control), soil:palm fiber biochar (1:1), soil:palm fiber biochar (1:2), and soil:palm fiber biochar (2:1)]. Data experiments were analyzed using analysis of variance at the 5% error level and followed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test at the 5% error level. The results showed that the dose of mycorrhiza 15 g plant-1 gave better results on plant height, weight of dry, number of stomata, and width of stomatal openings. Treatment of the composition planting media soil: palm fiber biochar with a ratio of 2:1 gave better results on stomatal opening width. Keywords: Phosphate, pectin, stomatal, transpiration, Verbenaceae

Abstract

Zodia are included in medicinal plants because it contains secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, steroids/triterpenoids that have many benefit and also as mosquito repellents. The growth and content of secondary metabolites in plants can be affected by environmental factors such as water availability. Research on the cultivation of this crop is still limited. Environmental modification in cultivation is needed to increase its secondary metabolites, and the study of the potential of this plant as medicine are necessary. This study aimed to determine the effect of water availability on the growth and secondary metabolites of zodia. The research was carried out in July-November 2021 in Greenhouse, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sebelas Maret, Surakarta. The method used was a completely randomized design, one treatment factor with 4 levels namely, 100, 80, 60 and 40% of field capacity. Each treatment was repeated 6 times so that there were 24 experimental polybags. The data analysis used is Analysis of Variance, and the Duncan’s Multiple Range Test at the 5% level. The results showed that the availability of water at a level of 60% field capacity gave the best average growth parameters (plant height and number of leaves) among other treatments. The flavonoid content in each treatment showed the same average. The results of the GCMS (Gas Cromatography and Mass Spectroscopy) test of zodia leaves showed that there were dominant bioactive compounds, namely ethylbenzene, octadecamethyl cyclononasiloxane, pentadecanoid acid and heptadecanoid acid. It is suspected that the content of these compounds has the potential as antifungal, antibacterial, antioxidant and anticancer.

Abstract

Mas Kirana banana (Musa sp.) is a superior local variety from Lumajang, East Java, valued for its favorable fruit size and consumer preference. Conventional propagation of this variety is limited due to its low production of saplings (2–3 per clump), making large-scale cultivation inefficient. Tissue culture techniques offer an alternative approach to accelerate propagation. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of yeast extract and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) on the in vitro growth of Mas Kirana banana explants. The experiment was arranged in a factorial completely randomized design (CRD) with two factors: yeast extract at four concentrations (0, 400, 800, and 1200 mg L⁻¹) and IAA at four concentrations (0, 0.75, 1.5, and 2.25 ppm). Growth responses were assessed based on shoot emergence, shoot height, root development, and leaf formation. Yeast extract significantly affected shoot emergence time; however, its effect was inhibitory rather than promotive. The control (0 mg L⁻¹) produced the fastest emergence (11 DAP), whereas higher yeast concentrations (400–1200 mg L⁻¹) delayed emergence to 13–22 DAP.. IAA significantly influenced shoot height, with the best performance at 1.5 ppm, while other growth parameters were not significantly affected. These findings indicate that the effectiveness of yeast extract and IAA is highly concentration-dependent, and their roles in improving micropropagation of Mas Kirana banana require further optimization. This study provides baseline information to support the development of more efficient tissue culture protocols for large-scale propagation of this important local variety.

Abstract

Barangan banana is a banana variety that has high economic value, but its production is still carried out conventionally, resulting in limited barangan bananas on the market. The use of tissue culture methods can quickly produce high-quality, disease-free plants regardless of seasonal conditions. The aim of this research is to determine the effect of providing the best ZPT IAA and BA for the growth of the Barangan banana planet. The research was conducted in August-October 2023 at the Biotechnology and Plant Physiology Laboratory, Sebelas Maret University. This research used a two-factor Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 6 replications. The first factor was the use of ZPT Indole Acetic Acid (concentrations 0, 0.5, 1, and 1.5 ppm and the second factor was the use of ZPT Benzyl Adenine (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5 ppm). The variables observed were root emergence time, number of roots, root length, time of leaf emergence, number of leaves, time of shoot emergence, number of shoots, and height of shoots. The observed data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) with a 5% level test and if there was a significant difference, it was continued with Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at the level 5%. The results showed that giving 0.5 ppm IAA increased root length; 0.5 ppm IAA was given optimally for root formation; and 1 ppm IAA increased the shoot height of the Barangan banana plnalet. Giving BA 0.5 ppm root number; BA 1, 5 ppm produces the highest number of leaves; BA 1 ppm increases shoot height of barangan banana plantlets.
