Abstract

Bamboo weaving is generally done in a static sitting position for long periods, using simple work equipment that does not account for ergonomic considerations. These conditions have the potential to increase the risk of musculoskeletal disorders and reduce work productivity. This study aims to design a bamboo weaving tool and ergonomic chair based on anthropometric data of bamboo weaving workers and evaluate the increase in occupational safety and health (K3) knowledge after ergonomics education. The study used a quantitative approach with an anthropometric-based ergonomic design method. Data collection was carried out on 30 respondents by measuring relevant body dimensions, including the width of the little finger, the width of the ring finger, the width of the middle finger, the maximum grip diameter, the width of the hips, the popliteal height, the buttocks-popliteal, and the sitting shoulder height. Data were analyzed using normality tests, uniformity tests, data sufficiency tests, and percentile calculations. The results showed that all anthropometric data were normally distributed, uniform, and met the sample adequacy requirement. The recommended final dimensions of the weaving tool include a grip length of 9 cm, a grip diameter of 4 cm, and a blade length of 7.8 cm. The resulting ergonomic chair dimensions consist of a seat base width of 46.13 cm, a seat height of 41 cm, a seat base length of 42.30 cm, and a backrest height of 46.13 cm. Paired-sample t-test results showed a significant increase in workers' knowledge after ergonomics and OSH training (p<0.001). Anthropometric-based work facility design has been proven to produce designs that suit user characteristics and have the potential to improve the comfort, safety, and work effectiveness of bamboo weavers.

Abstract

The community service program was designed to foster a sustainable culture of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) among ten home-based fish-processing micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Purwodadi Village, Sidayu Subdistrict, Gresik Regency, East Java. An initial assessment identified critical safety gaps, such as inconsistent use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), inadequate emergency facilities, and the absence of OSH Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Between May and June 2026, the program implemented awareness campaigns, technical training, and the establishment of SME OSH cadres through a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach. Quantitative evaluation indicated a substantial increase in knowledge, with average pre-test scores rising from 60.32 to 92.75 following the intervention. The integration of educational calendar modules and the distribution of basic PPE facilitated ongoing monitoring. These findings suggest that a participatory, cadre-based approach is effective in transforming the OSH paradigm from basic compliance to a strategic investment in MSME sustainability.
