Abstract

Roadside shade trees play an important role in maintaining urban environmental quality; however, public understanding of their ecological functions remains limited. This community service activity aimed to improve public knowledge and awareness of the ecological functions of roadside shade trees in the Jalan Udayana area, Mataram City. The activity was conducted on May 25, 2026, through vegetation observation, tree inventory, environmental education, and interactive discussions. A total of 20 participants, consisting of local residents, visitors, students, youth organization members, and environmental community representatives, took part in the program. The inventory results identified 28 tree individuals belonging to 12 species, with Krey Payung (Filicium decipiens) being the dominant species. Of the observed trees, 23 individuals were classified as healthy, while 5 individuals showed signs of disease, including leaf spots, fungal infection, and parasitic attacks. In addition, 13 trees exhibited dust accumulation on their leaf surfaces, indicating their role in trapping airborne particles and improving air quality. The educational activities enhanced participants’ understanding of the ecological functions of roadside trees, including air pollutant absorption, dust interception, noise reduction, oxygen production, and urban climate regulation. These findings suggest that vegetation-based environmental education can serve as an effective approach to increasing public awareness and encouraging community participation in the conservation of urban green open spaces and sustainable environmental management.

Abstract

Household organic waste remains a significant environmental challenge in rural areas due to limited community participation in sustainable waste management practices. This community service program aimed to enhance community knowledge and awareness of household organic waste management by applying Biopore Infiltration Holes (BIHs) in Selengen Village, North Lombok Regency. The program integrated community education with hands-on BIH installation, providing a participatory approach that directly engaged residents in learning and practice. The activities involved 35 participants, predominantly housewives, followed by the installation of 13 biopore infiltration holes across five hamlets: Perigi, Tangga, Dompu Indah, Tampes, and Selengen. The implementation was characterized by active community participation during educational sessions, installation, and maintenance activities, indicating strong community acceptance of the program. The combination of educational outreach and practical field implementation represents the program's key strength, enabling participants to immediately apply the knowledge gained in managing household organic waste. The program helped improve community awareness and skills in environmentally friendly organic waste management while promoting the adoption of biopore technology as a simple, sustainable household waste management practice. These results demonstrate that a participatory community-based approach effectively strengthens local capacity for organic waste management and supports the long-term sustainability of environmental conservation initiatives at the village level.
