Abstract

The development of social media as part of digital transformation has had a significant impact on religious communication patterns in society. Social media has two sides: they help spread the values of diversity and tolerance, but they also serve as a medium to spread hoaxes and radical ideologies, which are harmful to social balance. The purpose of this research is to study how religious moderation serves as an ideological filter to counter disinformation and religious extremism in the digital world.  Qualitative methods and desk research were used; various scholarly sources and relevant data were examined. The findings show that core values in religious moderation, such as tawasuth (balance), i'tidal (justice), and tasamuh (tolerance), have great potential to be internalized in digital communication practices, particularly by the younger generation. Data from BNPT in 2024 that recorded the blocking of more than 180,000 radical contents shows the urgency of this issue. Therefore, strengthening digital literacy and disseminating moderate religious narratives are important strategies to build a healthy, inclusive digital space free from extreme content. Religious moderation is not only a religious principle, but also a preventive approach to maintain social integration in the digital era.
