Abstract

This study aimed to improve students’ independence character through modified big ball game learning (handball) in Physical Education, Sports, and Health (PJOK). The study used the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method conducted in two cycles, namely Cycle I and Cycle II. The subjects of this study were 27 students of class VII F at SMPN 8 Banjarbaru. Data collection techniques included observation, documentation, and an independence questionnaire consisting of 16 statement items. In Cycle I, learning activities were carried out through simple handball games involving passing, dribbling, catching, and teamwork activities. In Cycle II, learning was implemented in a more structured way by giving students responsibilities and roles in the game so that they became more active and confident. The results showed an improvement in students’ independence character. In Cycle I, the assessment percentage reached 81.31% with a very good category, while in Cycle II it increased to 92.45% with a very good category. These findings indicate that the implementation of modified big ball games (handball) was able to improve students’ independence character in PJOK learning. Students became more active, responsible, confident, and able to take initiative during the learning process.
