Abstract

This study examines the practice of Living Qur’an within the grave pilgrimage ritual at the Sacred Tomb of Habib Ali bin Abdurrahman Al-Habsyi in Kwitang, Central Jakarta. The focus of the study is directed toward the interpretation and manifestation of Qur’anic values in the behavior of pilgrimage participants, as well as the relationship of this phenomenon to Karl Mannheim’s Sociology of Knowledge theory. The research employs a qualitative approach, with data collected through in-depth interviews and participant observation. Data analysis was conducted using Karl Mannheim’s models of objective, expressive, and documentary meaning to reveal the layers of meaning embedded in Qur’anic recitations within the ritual context. The findings demonstrate that the practice of grave pilgrimage is not merely an expression of individual spirituality, but also a social reflection of the collective understanding of the Qur’an. The recitation of Surah Yasin, tahlil, and specific prayers are understood as means of tabarruk (seeking blessings), strengthening scholarly chains of transmission (sanad), and internalizing the values of rahmah (compassion) and ukhuwah Islamiyah (Islamic brotherhood). The pilgrimage tradition at the tomb of Habib Ali Kwitang represents a tangible manifestation of the “living” Qur’an within the social sphere of a religious urban community.
