Abstract

Contemporary Islamic thought in Indonesia is a form of intellectual ijtihad of Muslims in understanding Islamic teachings contextually in accordance with the developments of the times. This study aims to describe the development, figures, and patterns of contemporary Islamic thought in Indonesia in facing the challenges of modernity, globalization, and socio-cultural change. The method used is a literature study with a descriptive-analytical approach to various literature related to Islamic thought in Indonesia. The results of the study indicate that the development of contemporary Islamic thought in Indonesia is influenced by the interaction between Islamic teachings and the social reality of plural society. The Islamic renewal movement in the early 20th century gave birth to large organizations such as Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama, which represent the currents of modernism and traditionalism. In addition, figures such as Harun Nasution, Nurcholish Madjid, Abdurrahman Wahid, and Azyumardi Azra played an important role in developing rational, moderate, inclusive, and humanist Islamic thought. The patterns of contemporary Islamic thought in Indonesia include fundamentalism, traditionalism, modernism, and neo-modernism, demonstrating the diverse dynamics of Islamic intellectualism. Thus, contemporary Islamic thought in Indonesia plays a strategic role in maintaining a balance between Islamic values, tradition, modernity, and multicultural society. Keywords: Islamic Thought, Islamic Contemporary, Religious Moderation.
