Abstract

This study aimed to explore the role of teachers in developing students’ language skills at SMP Negeri 8 Kota Bengkulu. Language skills, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing, are essential competencies that support students’ academic achievement and communication abilities. This research employed a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and documentation involving Indonesian language teachers and students. The findings revealed that teachers played important roles as facilitators, motivators, mediators, and evaluators in the learning process. Teachers implemented various learning activities such as group discussions, presentations, reading literacy programs, and writing exercises to improve students’ language skills. In addition, continuous feedback and guidance provided by teachers encouraged students to participate actively in learning activities. The results indicated that the teacher's active involvement contributed positively to the development of students’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing abilities. Therefore, optimizing the teacher’s role is crucial to support the sustainable development of students’ language competencies
