Abstract

This study was motivated by the fact that some students' behaviors have not fully reflected Pancasila values. The purpose of this study was to describe the strategies used by Pancasila Education teachers in instilling Pancasila values, identify the obstacles encountered, and explain the solutions implemented to overcome those obstacles. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design conducted at SMP Islam Al Fattahiyyah Tulungagung. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The validity of the data was ensured through source triangulation and technique triangulation. The findings revealed that teachers implemented several strategies to instill Pancasila values, including role modeling, habituation, personal approaches, participatory and contextual learning, discipline reinforcement, and the provision of appreciation to students. The obstacles encountered included students’ low levels of discipline and responsibility, peer environmental influences, seniority behavior, and inadequate family supervision. To address these obstacles, teachers conducted continuous guidance, strengthened positive habituation, collaborated with parents and school authorities, and implemented positive discipline. The study concludes that the successful instillation of Pancasila values requires synergy among teachers, schools, families, and the students’ social environment.

Abstract

Character education is one of the important aspects in shaping students’ personalities, especially discipline character as a reinforcement of citizenship values. Discipline character is not only related to obedience to school regulations, but also associated with responsibility, self-awareness, and orderly behavior in daily life. However, in reality, there are still students who show a lack of discipline, such as arriving late, disobeying school rules, and lacking responsibility in completing their duties and obligations at school. Therefore, efforts are needed to build discipline character through a positive pesantren-based culture implemented within the madrasah environment. This research aimed to describe the process of internalizing discipline character, the forms of positive pesantren-based culture, and the supporting and inhibiting factors in the internalization of discipline character among ninth grade students at MTs Al Huda Bandung. This research used a qualitative approach with a descriptive research design. The data collection techniques were conducted through observation, interviews, and documentation. The informants in this research included guidance and counseling teachers, Civic Education teachers, homeroom teachers, the vice principal of student affairs, and ninth grade students of MTs Al Huda Bandung. The data analysis techniques were carried out. through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The validity of the data was obtained through source triangulation and technique triangulation. The results of the research showed that the process of internalizing discipline character was carried out through the habituation of religious activities, teachers’ role modeling, giving advice, enforcing rules, and continuous guidance. The forms of positive pesantren-based culture implemented included congregational prayers, habituation activities before learning, greeting and politeness culture, time discipline, and obedience to madrasah regulations. The supporting factors in the internalization process included a religious school environment, cooperation among teachers, and the existence of character-building programs. Meanwhile, the inhibiting factors included the low awareness of some students, the influence of peer environments, and the lack of supervision from the family environment. Based on the results of the research, it can be concluded that a positive pesantrenbased culture has an important role in shaping students’ discipline character as a reinforcement of citizenship values. Through habituation, role modeling, and the consistent implementation of rules, students are able to understand and apply discipline values in their daily lives within the madrasah environment.

Abstract

The increasing awareness of the limitations of physical punishment in schools has encouraged the adoption of more humanistic disciplinary practices that emphasize character development. This study aimed to explore the implementation of positive discipline without physical punishment at MTs Maqwa Tulungagung, with particular attention to its contribution to students' character formation, the roles played by teachers, students' responses, and the factors influencing its implementation. A descriptive qualitative design was employed in this research. Data were obtained through observations, interviews, and documentation involving the principal, teachers, and students. The collected data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings demonstrate that positive discipline is implemented through teachers' exemplary behavior, respectful and humanistic communication, the cultivation of positive habits, and the application of educational consequences instead of physical punishment. These practices contribute to the development of students' discipline, responsibility, independence, and respect for others. Teachers function not only as instructors but also as mentors and role models, while students generally respond positively because they feel valued, understood, and encouraged to comply with school regulations through self-awareness rather than fear. The implementation is supported by strong school leadership, teachers' commitment, a religious school culture, and parental involvement. However, differences in students' personalities, peer influence, and limited supervision outside school remain significant challenges. Overall, positive discipline without physical punishment provides an effective approach to promoting sustainable character development through the internalization of values and the growth of students' self-awareness.
