Abstract

This paper investigated the physical characteristics of wood–plastic composites, which were made using recycled high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and using wood flour from Pometia sp (Matoa), Intsia sp (Merbau) and Alstonia sp (Pulai) as filler. The sawdust was taken from local furniture industry and the HDPE was collected from recycled plastic bottles of mineral water. Composite panels were made from recycled HDPE through hot-press moulding produced excellent stability based on JIS and SNI Standard, especially for moisture content and swelling characteristics. The water absorption and targeted density were also measured. In this study we found that the water absorption and the density of the composite exceeded our expectation. The composites showed high variation average for water absorption. For the swelling behavior, the value is varied from 5.74% to 25.57% after 2 hours soaking and varied between 7.56% to 28.53% after 24 hours soaking. This study has shown the composites had a high possibility to be used for interior and non-structural purposes.

Abstract

This study investigates the physical properties of cement boards made from oil palm trunk waste and evaluates the effect of varying cement-to-palm trunk waste ratios (70:30, 75:25 and 80:20). The independent variable is the cement-to-waste ratio, and the dependent variables include density, moisture content, thickness swelling, and water absorption. Results show that the density of the boards ranges from 0.70 g/cm³ to 1.02 g/cm³, moisture content from 6.79% to 14.49%, thickness swelling after 24 hours of immersion from 17.50% to 70.00%, and water absorption from 40.41% to 68.04%. Ratio 70:30 and 75:25 meet Indonesian National Standard (SNI) criteria for density and moisture content, but thickness swelling exceeds the standard, indicating poor dimensional stability. Increasing cement content improves density and reduces moisture content, but challenges remain in achieving dimensional stability and water resistance. These findings suggest that while oil palm trunk waste can be used in cement board production, further optimization, such as additive incorporation or feedstock modification, is needed to enhance water resistance and stability.

Abstract

Abstract Termites, which are destructive pests for both plants and wooden structures, pose a significant threat to humans. In Indonesia, termite attacks result in estimated annual economic losses of 1.67 trillion rupiah. To address this issue, effective termite control measures are essential. This study investigates the efficacy of poison extracted from jung rahab (Baeckea frutescens L.) against termites. The research employed an experimental approach with a completely randomized design (CRD), including two treatments and five replications. Concentrations tested were 10%, 15%, and 20%. Results revealed the highest retention value at 0.03494 g for the 10% concentration. However, this value remains below the SNI 01-5010.1-1999 standard. A 10% solution of Jung Rahab leaf extract significantly reduced termite mortality by 98.4%. All concentration treatments led to decreased weight in test samples compared to the control, indicating the inhibitory effect of Jung Rahab leaf extract on termite consumption. Solutions with concentrations of 10%, 15%, and 20% effectively suppressed termite feeding rates. Key words: Termites, extract, retention, mortality Abstrak Rayap merupakan salah satu jenis hama tanaman dan perusak kayu bangunan yang merugikan manusia.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the profile of critical thinking skills students in science learning with collaborative learning design sharing and jumping tasks. Indicators of critical thinking skills used are based on Ennis (1985). The method used is descriptive qualitative. Lesson design sharing & jumping tasks consist of three core activities: sharing task 1, sharing task 2, and jumping task. The instruments used are observation and audio recording of the learning process. Data were analyzed by Transcript Based Lesson Analysis (TBLA). The results of the analysis show that the collaborative learning design of sharing and jumping tasks can bring up students' critical thinking skills. The profile of students' critical thinking skills in sharing task 1 activities found 6 indicators with the highest percentage at 58%, on sharing task 2 found 12 indicators with the highest percentage at 100%, and jumping task found 9 indicators with the highest percentage at 75%. Keywords: lesson design, critical thinking skills, TBLA, sharing & jumping task. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v23i2.pp701-711
