Abstract

This study aims to analyze the development of the interpersonal relationship between Margaret Tate and Andrew Paxton in the movie The Proposal using the Social Penetration Theory proposed by Altman and Taylor. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with scenes and dialogues as the unit of analysis to examine the relationship development between the two main characters. Data were collected through repeated observation of the film, documentation of dialogues and character expressions, and relevant literature studies. The findings reveal that Margaret and Andrew’s relationship develops through the four stages of Social Penetration Theory: orientation, explorative affective exchange, affective stage, and stable stage. In the orientation stage, their relationship is limited to a formal and professional interaction between employer and employee. Furthermore, their forced engagement encourages deeper self disclosure and personal communication. The relationship gradually becomes more intimate through emotional openness, trust, and spontaneous communication. In the stable stage, both characters demonstrate a stable relationship characterized by honesty, full openness, and strong emotional intimacy. This study concludes that Social Penetration Theory effectively explains the transformation of interpersonal relationships from superficial interactions into intimate relationships through gradual and reciprocal self disclosure processes.
