Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of ice breaking as a learning strategy to capture student attention at SMP Negeri 6 Tanjungpinang. The background of this study is based on low student attention and concentration during the learning process caused by boredom and a lack of varied learning methods. Ice breaking is seen as a learning strategy that can create a pleasant learning atmosphere and increase student focus and engagement. The type of research used in this study is qualitative, focusing on the experiences and meanings of the research subjects. Data collection techniques were conducted through direct observation in the school environment to clearly observe the implementation of ice breaking in learning activities. Observations were conducted by observing teacher and student activities during the teaching and learning process. Data analysis techniques were carried out through several stages: identifying phenomena relevant to the research title, reviewing previous research as references, conducting research in the field, analyzing the obtained data, and drawing conclusions based on the analysis results. The results indicate that the implementation of ice breaking can create a more conducive classroom atmosphere, increasing student attention, enthusiasm, and participation during learning. Thus, ice breaking can be used as an effective learning strategy to support the teaching and learning process in junior high schools.

Abstract

Writing and storytelling activities require students to be able to identify, develop, and convey ideas in a structured and engaging manner. However, students may still experience difficulties in finding and developing ideas when learning activities use limited approaches. This activity introduced a coastal environment-based video as a stimulus for students’ writing and storytelling activities at SMP Negeri 004 Satu Atap Karimun. The activity was conducted on August 26, 2026, involving 40 students from Grades VII, VIII, and IX. The activities included a brief presentation on the coastal environment and plastic waste, a screening of the animated video “Jejak Plastik di Laut,” discussion and idea exploration, writing and storytelling activities, and the completion of a student response questionnaire. Data were collected through 20 questionnaire statements using a four-point Likert scale and five open-ended questions, and were analyzed descriptively through percentages and thematic grouping. The results showed predominantly positive student responses to the use of video as a learning stimulus, particularly in terms of visual appeal, relevance to the coastal environment, assistance in generating ideas, support for writing activities, and students’ perceived confidence in storytelling. This activity indicates that coastal environment-based video media can be introduced as a relevant and engaging stimulus for supporting students’ literacy activities.
