<![CDATA[Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh berkembangnya Gospel Chops sebagai teknik permainan drum modern yang berasal dari tradisi Black Gospel dan ditandai oleh penggunaan pola linear drumming, subdivisi ritmik kompleks, orkestrasi antar bagian drumset, serta displacement aksen. Meskipun teknik ini telah banyak digunakan dalam praktik permainan drum kontemporer, penelitian yang secara khusus membahas penerapannya dalam konteks aransemen lagu pop masih relatif terbatas. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi dan menganalisis penerapan teknik Gospel Chopsdalam aransemen lagu Somebody karya Justin Bieber serta pengaruhnya terhadap stabilitas groove. Penelitian menggunakan metode kualitatif berbasis Practice-Based Research (PBR), yang menempatkan praktik musikal sebagai sumber utama pengetahuan melalui proses eksplorasi teknik, eksperimen pola permainan, dokumentasi audio-video, transkripsi notasi, dan refleksi kritis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa bentuk Gospel Chops yang paling efektif diterapkan dalam aransemen ini meliputi linear chops, hybrid chops berbasis kombinasi rudimen seperti single stroke, double stroke, paradiddle, dan five stroke roll, serta accent displacement chops. Teknik-teknik tersebut difungsikan sebagai elemen transisi, fill-in, build-up, dan klimaks lagu, bukan sebagai pola utama yang dimainkan secara terus-menerus. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa keberhasilan penerapan Gospel Chops dalam musik pop tidak ditentukan oleh tingkat kompleksitas teknik, melainkan oleh penempatan yang kontekstual, kontrol dinamika, dan kemampuan mempertahankan stabilitas groove. Dengan demikian, Gospel Chops dapat memperkaya variasi ritmik dan ekspresi musikal tanpa menghilangkan karakter estetik lagu pop apabila diterapkan secara proporsional dan berorientasi pada fungsi musikal.Kata kunci : Gospel chops, Stabilitas groove, arransemen musik, practice based researchAn Exploration of Gospel Chops Techniques on Drumset in the Arrangement of Justin Bieber's "Somebody"This study is motivated by the growing development of Gospel Chops as a modern drumming technique rooted in the Black Gospel tradition, characterized by linear drumming patterns, complex rhythmic subdivisions, and accent displacement. Although widely used in contemporary drumming practices, studies examining its application within pop music arrangements remain limited. This research aims to explore and analyze the application of Gospel Chops techniques in the arrangement of Justin Bieber’s song Somebody and their influence on groove stability. The study employs a qualitative approach using Practice-Based Research (PBR), involving technical exploration, performance experiments, audio-video documentation, drum notation transcription, and critical reflection. The findings reveal that the most effective forms of Gospel Chops in this arrangement are linear chops, hybrid chops, and accent displacement chops, which function as transitional elements, fill-ins, build-ups, and climactic devices within the song structure. The study further demonstrates that the successful application of Gospel Chops in pop music depends on contextual placement, dynamic control, and the ability to maintain groove stability.
