Abstract

This study examines the role of chunking in enhancing interpreting performance through a library-based research approach. Chunking, defined as the cognitive process of grouping linguistic input into meaningful units, has been widely discussed in psycholinguistics and translation studies as a key strategy for managing working memory limitations. By reviewing existing literature on interpreting theory, cognitive processing, and language comprehension, this research highlights how chunking facilitates more efficient information processing during interpreting tasks. The findings suggest that chunking enables interpreters to segment continuous speech into manageable units, thereby improving accuracy, fluency, and retention. It is also allowing them to anticipate meaning and reduce cognitive overload. This paper synthesizes insights from books, journal articles, and previous empirical studies to demonstrate that chunking is not only a fundamental cognitive mechanism but also a trainable skill in interpreter education. In conclusion, the research underscores the importance of incorporating chunking strategies into interpreting training programs to enhance overall performance and comprehension.
