Abstract

Knee pain is a musculoskeletal complaint that can impair mobility and daily activities. This study aimed to compare the effects of infrared therapy and heel slide exercises on knee pain intensity among adults in Banjaran Pucung Village. A quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental, two-group pre-test and post-test design was employed. Thirty respondents were selected via purposive sampling and divided into two groups-infrared and heel slide-with 15 respondents in each. Pain intensity was measured using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) before and after a four-week intervention period (conducted three times weekly). Data analysis included descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, Levene’s homogeneity test, paired-samples t-test, and independent-samples t-test, with a significance level of 0.05. In the infrared group, mean pain intensity decreased (p<0.001), and in the heel slide group, mean scores also decreased (p<0.001). The reduction in the heel slide group was greater than that in the infrared group. Between-group analysis revealed a significant difference (t = -9.819, p<0.001). In conclusion, both interventions effectively reduced knee pain intensity, but heel slide exercises resulted in a greater reduction. These findings support the use of heel slide exercises as a practical alternative for active physiotherapy intervention in adults suffering from knee pain.
