Abstract

The use of nutmeg shell biochar as a partial cement substitution is a strategic step in utilizing agricultural waste to create environmentally friendly concrete and reduce carbon emissions. This research employed an experimental method using 36 cylindrical test specimens measuring 15 x 30 cm. The mixture variations tested included normal concrete (0%) and the addition of nutmeg shell biochar at 2.5%, 5%, and 7.5% as a partial replacement for cement. The tests conducted covered slump tests and concrete compressive strength at 7, 14, and 28 days of age. The test results showed that the slump value increased from 80 mm in normal concrete to 84 mm, 87.67 mm, and 96.67 mm as the percentage of biochar increased, indicating an improvement in concrete workability. At 28 days of age, normal concrete yielded the highest compressive strength of 23.97 MPa, while the 2.5%, 5%, and 7.5% biochar variations produced compressive strengths of 17.17 MPa, 17.55 MPa, and 16.32 MPa, respectively. The 5% variation was identified as the optimum substitution because it provided the highest compressive strength among the biochar variations, reaching 73.22% of the normal concrete compressive strength. Overall, nutmeg shell biochar demonstrates significant potential as a partial cement substitution material to support sustainable and eco-friendly concrete construction.
