Abstract

Watering plants is a maintenance task that requires regularity; however, manual execution can be hindered by time constraints and scheduling inconsistencies. This study aims to implement an automated chili plant watering system using an Arduino Uno R3 and a DS1302 Real-Time Clock (RTC) in Waringinkurung Village, Cikeusal District, Serang Regency, Banten. The system is designed using an Arduino Uno R3 as the main controller, a DS1302 RTC for timekeeping, a 5V relay for pump control, a push-button for manual control, and a 125W water pump to distribute water from a storage tank to the plants via a piping network. The research employs a design-and-build methodology, encompassing hardware design, software design, implementation, and system testing. The system features three automatic watering schedules—07:05, 11:42, and 15:31—with a 10-minute duration for each. Testing covered RTC time accuracy, schedule adherence, pump operation duration, manual mode functionality, and water distribution. Test results indicate that the DS1302 RTC had an average time deviation of 0.6 seconds, while watering duration tests yielded an average error of 0.27%. These results demonstrate that the system successfully performs automated watering based on the schedule and supports manual operation as designed.

Abstract

This study examines the level of musculoskeletal risk faced by workers of the home-industry business (UMKM) Kerupuk Jangkar during the frying and packing activities, which are performed almost entirely manually. Preliminary observation indicated postures inconsistent with ergonomic principles, yet no formal posture assessment had previously been conducted at this business. This study aimed to identify the subjective musculoskeletal complaint pattern of five workers using the Nordic Body Map (NBM) questionnaire, and to measure the postural risk level of the frying activity using the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) and Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) methods. Body-segment angles were measured from field photographs across two observation sessions using the Angulus photo-based joint-angle measurement application, covering the upper arm, elbow, trunk, and neck; the wrist, wrist-twist, and leg parameters were estimated from direct field observation using the standard criteria of each worksheet because they were not captured photographically. The NBM results from three workers with representative response variation indicated complaints concentrated in the lower back, waist, and buttock region. Consistent with this pattern, the frying activity, characterized by sustained forward trunk flexion, an elevated and extended upper arm, and a nearly straight elbow while operating a long-handled stirring tool, produced a RULA score of 7 and a REBA score of 12, both in the highest action category requiring immediate posture correction. These findings imply that immediate ergonomic intervention, including work-station height adjustment and tool redesign, is required to reduce the musculoskeletal risk faced by the workers.
