Abstract

Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) is a fundamental component of mining operations, given the high risk of occupational accidents. The use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is an essential strategy for preventing work-related accidents. However, low compliance with PPE use remains a concern at the gold mining site of PT Bulawan Daya Lestari, Bolaang Mongondow Regency, North Sulawesi. This study aimed to describe workers’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding PPE use at the gold mining site of PT Bulawan Daya Lestari, Bolaang Mongondow Regency, North Sulawesi. A quantitative descriptive study with a cross-sectional approach was conducted. A total of 150 respondents were selected from a population of 240 workers using simple random sampling, with the sample size determined using the Slovin formula (5% margin of error). Data were collected using an observation sheet to assess practices and questionnaires to measure knowledge and attitudes. The data were analyzed using univariate analysis presented as frequency distributions and percentages. The findings showed that 144 respondents (96%) had good knowledge of PPE use. Regarding attitudes, 102 respondents (68%) demonstrated moderate attitudes, while 47 respondents (31.3%) demonstrated good attitudes. Furthermore, 142 respondents (94%) demonstrated good PPE use practices in the workplace. In conclusion, workers at PT Bulawan Daya Lestari had good knowledge, moderate attitudes, and good practices regarding PPE use. The company is encouraged to strengthen OSH education programs, provide more ergonomic PPE, and improve supervision systems to promote better attitudes and sustained compliance with PPE use.
