Abstract

This study aimed to examine the relationship between watching English YouTube content and students' motivation to learn English at Al-Burhaniyah Junior High School. This research employed a quantitative approach with a correlational research design. The population consisted of seventh- and eighth-grade students, and total sampling was applied, resulting in 62 students as the research sample. Data were collected using two questionnaires, each consisting of 12 items. The instruments were validated through expert judgment and pilot testing. The reliability test showed a Cronbach's Alpha coefficient of 0.770, indicating that the instruments were reliable. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The Shapiro–Wilk test indicated that the data were not normally distributed (Sig. < 0.05); therefore, the Spearman Rank Correlation test was used to test the hypothesis. The results showed a correlation coefficient of 0.586 with a significance value of p < 0.001, indicating a moderate positive and statistically significant relationship between watching English YouTube content and students' motivation to learn English. Thus, the alternative hypothesis was accepted. It can be concluded that students who watch English YouTube content more frequently tend to have higher motivation to learn English. Therefore, English YouTube content can be utilized as an effective alternative learning medium to support and improve students' motivation in learning English.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the correlation between students' habit of watching English content on Instagram and their speaking ability at MTs Al Ihyaul Irsyad Sukabumi. This study employed a quantitative approach using a correlational research design. The population consisted of 180 students, while the sample comprised 40 students selected through purposive sampling. The research instruments included an 18-item questionnaire to measure students' habit of watching English content on Instagram and a speaking test to assess students' speaking ability. The questionnaire was validated using the Pearson Product Moment correlation, and all items were found to be valid. The reliability test using Cronbach's Alpha yielded a coefficient of 0.894, indicating high reliability. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, normality test, linearity test, Pearson Product Moment correlation, and coefficient of determination. The findings revealed that the data were normally distributed and met the assumption of linearity. The Pearson Product Moment correlation analysis showed a correlation coefficient of 0.815 with a significance value of 0.001 (p < 0.05), indicating a very strong positive and statistically significant correlation between students' habit of watching English content on Instagram and their speaking ability. Furthermore, the coefficient of determination indicated that watching English content on Instagram contributed 66.42% to students' speaking ability, while the remaining 33.58% was influenced by other factors not examined in this study. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a significant correlation between watching English content on Instagram and students' speaking ability at MTs Al Ihyaul Irsyad Sukabumi.
