Abstract

Acne (acne vulgaris) is a skin condition caused by various factors, one of which is infection by the bacterium Propionibacterium acnes. The leaves of the lemon pothos (Epipremnum aureum) are known to contain secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, tannins, and triterpenoids that have potential antibacterial properties. This study aims to determine the physical quality of an ethanol leaf extract gel formulation of golden pothos, its antibacterial activity against Propionibacterium acnes ATCC 6919, and to identify the optimal gel concentration for inhibiting the growth of this bacterium. The study showed that all gel formulations met physical quality requirements, including organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, and spreadability. Phytochemical analysis revealed that the ethanol extract of lemon-leaved betel leaves contains flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, tannins, and triterpenoids. The average inhibition zone diameters against Propionibacterium acnes were 6.1 mm at 4%, 7.4 mm at 8%, and 9.3 mm at 16%, respectively, while the positive control measured 12.1 mm, and the negative control showed no inhibitory effect. The results of the One-Way ANOVA test showed a significant difference among the treatment groups (p = 0.006).
