Abstract

This study aims to describe the representation of class, status, and power of characters in R. Wind's novel Durma based on Max Weber's social stratification perspective. The study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The data source is R. Wind's novel Durma, while the data are words, phrases, sentences, dialogues, and narratives representing the dimensions of class, status, and power. Data were collected through reading and note-taking techniques, then analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing based on Weber's theory. The findings identified 16 representative data, consisting of 7 data on class (economic background, profession, social mobility, lifestyle), 5 data on status (formal position, prestigious profession, descent, social respect), and 4 data on power (formal authority, family power, economic power). Class, status, and power do not operate separately, but are interrelated in forming the social structure and conflict dynamics among characters. This research enriches the study of sociology of literature through the application of Weber's social stratification theory to reveal social structure representation in a contemporary Indonesian novel.
