Abstract

This study examines the lexicon used by the brick-making community in Karangdiyeng Village, specifically in Selorejo Hamlet, Mojokerto Regency, from an ethnolinguistic perspective. Language not only functions as a tool for communication but also reflects a community’s knowledge and culture. This study aims to describe the lexicon used in the brick-making process and to uncover the cultural meanings embedded within it. The study employed a qualitative descriptive method, utilizing data collection techniques such as observation, listening, conversation, and note-taking. The results revealed 33 lexical entries, consisting of 19 terms for tools, 6 terms for materials, and 8 terms for brick-making activities. This lexicon reflects local knowledge, community customs, sociocultural values, group identity, and the intergenerational transmission of knowledge. Thus, the brickmakers’ lexicon serves not only as a system of naming but also represents the relationship between language, culture, and the social life of the community. This study can serve as a documentation of the local language and a reference for the cultural preservation of the Karangdiyeng community.
