Abstract

Background: Caring behavior is a fundamental component of anesthesiology nursing practice and plays an important role in improving the quality of nursing care. The personality characteristics of anesthesiology nurses may influence the caring behavior provided to patients. The Big Five Personality Traits consist of five dimensions: openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. This study aimed to examine the relationship between the Big Five Personality Traits and caring behavior among anesthesiology nurses. Methods: This quantitative study employed a descriptive correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. Participants were anesthesiology nurses selected using purposive sampling. Personality traits were assessed using the Big Five Inventory (BFI), while caring behavior was measured using the Caring Behaviors Inventory (CBI-24). Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses with Spearman’s rank correlation test. Results: A significant relationship was found between the dimensions of the Big Five Personality Traits and caring behavior among anesthesiology nurses. Openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, and agreeableness showed positive relationships with caring behavior, whereas neuroticism showed a negative relationship. Conclusion: The Big Five Personality Traits are associated with caring behavior among anesthesiology nurses. Personality characteristics may be an important factor influencing the implementation of caring behavior in anesthesiology nursing services.
