Abstract

Bali's tourism industry heavily relies on international visitors, making English proficiency essential for tour guides who serve as cultural ambassadors. This qualitative study examines the relationship between applied linguistics principles and the English communication skills of tour guides at PT. Indo Bali Tours. Through semi-structured interviews and observations, the study explores key linguistic aspects, including vocabulary usage, discourse structuring, and pragmatic competence. Findings indicate that a lack of specialized tourism vocabulary often leads to oversimplification of complex cultural and historical narratives. Additionally, language anxiety negatively impacts fluency and engagement. These insights underscore the need for structured, tourism-specific language training programs that integrate applied linguistics principles to enhance communication effectiveness. By bridging the gap between applied linguistics and the tourism industry, this study offers practical recommendations for improving English proficiency among tour guides, ultimately enriching the visitor experience.

Abstract

Background: Social interaction in the digital era shapes adolescents' mental well-being. While online platforms promote social connection, they also increase exposure to cyberbullying, social pressure, and Fear of Missing Out (FOMO), which may lead to psychological distress. This study investigated how social interaction and FOMO simultaneously affect adolescents' mental health in Bali. Methods: This cross-sectional study examined the relationship between social interaction, FOMO, and adolescent mental health among 345 adolescents aged 10–18 in Bali Province. Participants were active social media users recruited through consecutive sampling. Data were collected using a validated 106-item Likert-scale questionnaire (Cronbach's α = 0.968) and analyzed using logistic regression with a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: Multivariate analysis showed that poor face-to-face interaction (AOR = 9.75; 95% CI: 4.99–19.03; p = 0.036), high online interaction (AOR = 17.10; 95% CI: 8.51–33.99; p = 0.001), and identified FOMO status (AOR = 6.13; 95% CI: 3.36–11.16; p = 0.018) were significantly associated with higher psychological distress among adolescents. Conclusion: A combination of reduced in-person social interaction, excessive online engagement, and FOMO substantially increases the risk of mental health problems in adolescents. Limited offline interaction restricts emotional support and social validation, while high online activity and FOMO contribute to anxiety, social comparison, and feelings of exclusion. These findings highlight the importance of promoting balanced social interaction and digital literacy in the digital age to support adolescent mental health.

Abstract

In the context of BIPA learning, understanding the variations in the use of affixes in narrative texts has great relevance. Narrative is a type of text that is often used in language learning to develop speaking, writing and reading comprehension skills. The use of affixes in narrative texts by BIPA students can be a reflection of their understanding of Indonesian and their ability to apply them in certain contexts. This research uses Indonesian grammar theory. Grammatical theory is used to examine grammatical variations in sentences used and errors in the use of affixes in sentences used by BIPA students. In the data collection stage, the observation method was used. In applying the listening method, it is then followed by the note-taking technique. The collected data was analyzed using the agih method with basic techniques, namely deletion, substitution and permutation, while formal and informal methods were used to present the analysis results. Based on research that has been conducted, the types of affixes taught to BIPA students are the prefixes ber-, meng-, peng-, per-, di-, ter-, ber- R. Confixes peng-…-an, per-...-an, ke-...-an, ber-…-an, se-…-nya, ber-R-an, se-R-nya.. The suffix -nya, -an, and the simulfix meng-...-kan, meng-...-i, memper-...-i, memper-...-kan, ber-...-kan. Of the affixes taught, the types of affixes that BIPA students are able to use are the prefixes meng-, ter-, di-, ber-, peng-, ber-R. Confix peng-...-an, ke-…-an, per-…-an, ber-…-an, se-...-nya. Suffix -an, -nya, and the simulfixes meng-...-kan, meng-...-i, memper-...-kan, and memper-...-i. Infixes are not used by BIPA students because they are not taught
