Abstract

K The advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has significantly transformed digital media production, particularly through text-to-image generation systems that allow users to generate visual content based on textual prompts. However, this technology does not operate neutrally in producing social meanings. This research aims to unpack how AI represents ethnic identity, focusing specifically on the representation of Chinese-Indonesian teenage girls. Utilizing a qualitative approach, this study integrates Stuart Hall's theory of representation and Kress and van Leeuwen’s Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis (MCDA). The primary data, consisting of 36 generated images, were collected from the Microsoft Designer platform using specific prompts: "Chinese Indonesian Teenage Girl". The analysis examines five visual elements: physical appearance, clothing, facial expressions, settings, and visual composition. The findings suggest that Chinese Indonesian teenage girls are socially constructed as individuals with attractive appearances and positive attitudes in AI-generated images through recurring multimodal representations that privilege particular physical, cultural, and social characteristics. These visual repetitions reflect how AI functions not merely as a technical tool, but as an algorithmic mediator that reproduces aesthetic conventions and dominant stereotypes within digital visual culture.
