Abstract

Revelation and prophethood are two important concepts in Islam that serve as the primary foundation for shaping the Islamic worldview. Both function not only as theological foundations but also as guidelines for understanding knowledge, reality, values, and the purpose of life. This article aims to explore revelation and prophethood from an Islamic perspective and to explain their impact on the development of the Islamic worldview amid the challenges of modern thought. This study adopts a qualitative approach using a literature review method that includes conceptual and thematic analysis, as well as critical synthesis of primary sources such as the Qur’an and Sunnah, and secondary sources including the works of classical and modern scholars and relevant scholarly articles. The findings of this study indicate that revelation in Islam is a legitimate form of divine communication between Allah SWT and His prophets and messengers. Prophethood, or nubuwwah, serves as a divine institution that connects Allah with humankind. Both revelation and prophethood are interrelated and inseparable. Revelation provides the content in the form of divine guidance, while prophethood provides the context in the form of the prophet’s personality as a model for the implementation of revelation. The concepts of revelation and prophethood have very broad and profound implications for the Islamic worldview, encompassing epistemological, ontological, ethical-legal, and historical dimensions, as well as the relationship between science and religion.

Abstract

This article examines the concept of religion from a philosophical-theological perspective within Islamic Philosophy and elucidates why Islam holds the position as the true and final revealed religion. Utilizing a conceptual and philosophical analysis approach toward the primary texts of the Qur'an, Hadith, and Islamic philosophical literature, this study finds that the concept of Din in Islam possesses deep epistemological roots, closely intertwined with man's existential debt to God and the formation of a civilized society. Islam is affirmed as a revealed religion that fundamentally differs from cultural religions, wherein revelation occupies the highest epistemological hierarchy above reason and sensory perception. The finality of Islam is interpreted as the pinnacle and perfection of the prophetic sharia lineage, bearing the theological consequence that Prophet Muhammad SAW is the Khatamun Nabiyyin (the Seal of the Prophets). Albeit final, Islam remains highly relevant in the modern era as it provides immutable universal principles while simultaneously offering space for ijtihad (independent reasoning) in contextual applications. This research contributes a solid philosophical foundation to the understanding of the uniqueness and finality of Islam amidst the current of modern pluralism and relativism.
