Abstract

This study analyzes the Amrus Natalsya’s painting entitled "Tanah Airku" (2013). As a senior Indonesian painter with the ideology of "kiri" that’s popular in the history of Indonesia modern art certainly has strongly experiences about social phenomena that occur in Indonesia. By analyzing this painting, the author wants to see the continuity in expressing social phenomena including style, theme, concept, and meaning of his work. Research problem was revealed through the approach of art history and a grand theory of iconography and iconology from Panofsky. The research result is a style of painting categorized in expressionism style with metaphorical symbols. This style is developed in the era of art pluralism. The theme of this painting is the power of people in defending their rights with the basic concepts of resistance and struggle. These themes are variants of the theme and concept of the aesthetic paradigm from social realism convention during LEKRA. Symbolic value expressed by Amrus Natalsya in the painting "My Fatherland" (2013) is the crystallization of human’s struggle as the living symbol of defending their rights. Based on such analysis, it’s shown the continuity of expression of revolutionary populist paradigm in his paintings with new forms and expressions along with the spirit of the era.

Abstract

Artistic expression is a manifestation of cultural phenomena specific to an era and region. That is evident in Islamic visual arts, which present innovative forms with contemporary content. This research focuses on the works of Kemalezedine, who, through the lens of iconography and sociology of art theories, reveals religious and social criticism in the context of the Indonesian Muslim community. His works intensely highlight and criticize the phenomenon of Arabism, often appearing in understanding, spiritual practices, and identity politics in Indonesia. Criticism and discourse exploration in the creation of Kemalezedine's works are closely related to his creative process, formed while participating in the Neo Pitamaha and NU Abstract communities. His "Bloodline series" (2019) marks the pinnacle of religious criticism among the Indonesian Muslim community, especially the fundamentalists. This work questions the laws of symbolic depiction in Islamic visual arts and also sheds light on socio-cultural and identity politics issues rooted in Indonesia. With a critical and analytical approach, Kemalezedine's work serves not only as a medium of artistic expression but also as a deep social reflection medium, reflecting the dynamics and challenges faced by the contemporary Muslim community in Indonesia.

Abstract

The Great Mosque of Demak is one of the most significant Islamic historical heritages on the island of Java. Built in the 15th century by Raden Fatah and Walisongo, this mosque symbolizes the beginning of the glory of Islam in the archipelago. Its distinctive architecture depicts the acculturation of Javanese and Islamic culture, with unique elements such as the three-tiered pyramid roof which symbolizes faith, Islam and ihsan, as well as the "Saka Guru," the four main pillars of the mosque which have deep symbolic value. Saka Guru, including Saka Tatal which was assembled from small pieces of wood by Sunan Kalijaga, reflects the values of unity, strength and creativity within limitations. This tradition shows the important role of the Walisongo in spreading Islam as well as introducing mosque architecture that integrates local traditional and religious values. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method, with data collection through expert interviews, literature studies and field surveys. The results of the analysis reveal that Saka Guru not only supports the physical structure of the mosque but also represents the spiritual and cultural values passed down to the people of Demak. In this way, the Great Mosque of Demak has become a symbol of the combination of culture, spirituality and architecture which continues to be relevant today.

Abstract

This research explains the development of Islamic art in the modern and contemporary Indonesian art scene through Rispul and Tita Rubi's works collected by OHD Museum. The fundamental question is how OHD's taste in choosing its collection? How is the curation process in the exhibition Fragment of Modern Indonesian Art History? And why Rispul and Titarubi's works were chosen for the exhibition? This question is explained through the sociology of art theory from Becker and Bourdieu and uses a qualitative method with a case study approach. The results of the study show that OHD as a pure collector by providing distinction to the works he will collect, thereby gaining legitimacy in the Indonesian and Asian art scene. His legitimacy is able to influence the world of art collecting in Indonesia and Asia. The works of Tita Rubi and Rispul were collected and selected for the exhibition because they fit the criteria of being part of the development of contemporary art and continuing the Islamic art series.

Abstract

Abstract

ABSTRACT Islamic art, as a manifestation of culture, presents its distinctive style and carries the spirit of its time through its iconography and iconology, which not only serve as therapeutic media for religious buildings but also for works of painting. This study further elaborates on the iconology and iconography of contemporary Islamic art today through the works of Tita Rubi and Rispul in the "Fragments of Modern Indonesian Art History" exhibition at the OHD Museum. The issues to be discussed in this research include the patterns, themes, types, and socio-cultural contexts that shape the symbols in the works of Tita Rubi and Rispul in this exhibition. This research utilizes Erwin Panofsky's Iconology-Iconography theory and employs a qualitative method with a case study approach. Tita Rubi’s work (Bayang-Bayang yang Maha Kecil, 2022) and Rispul’s work (Gua Hira, 2017) are installation artworks with a new synthesis aesthetic paradigm. Tita Rubi's work addresses gender issues in Indonesian society, while Rispul's work reflects phenomena related to human existence in life. Both works showcase new iconography within the context of contemporary Islamic art and are an important part of the fragments of the history of modern Indonesian art, continuing the legacy of modern Indonesian Islamic art from earlier figures like AD Pirous, Syaiful Adnan, Ahmad Sadali, and Amang Rahman. Abstract

The rapid population growth in South Tangerang City has led to an increasing demand for housing, public facilities, and adequate community activity spaces. This phenomenon presents a challenge in providing proper and multifunctional spaces efficiently. This study aims to formulate architectural design strategies through a mixed-use development approach as a solution to mitigate the impact of population density in satellite urban areas. A mixed-methods approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative methods, was employed. Data were collected through questionnaires, field observations, spatial analysis, and in-depth interviews with residents and area users. Quantitative analysis was used to measure spatial needs and activity patterns, while qualitative analysis aimed to understand social preferences and local cultural contexts. The findings indicate that integrating residential, commercial, and public facility functions within a single area can improve land-use efficiency, reduce daily mobility, and strengthen inclusive social interaction spaces. The proposed design strategies include vertical spatial organization, flexible zoning, and the provision of green open spaces that support social and ecological sustainability. This research provides a foundation for the development of adaptive, participatory, and sustainable architectural designs for high-density urban areas such as South Tangerang City.

Abstract

Posters serve as a crucial component in media culture, acting as effective promotional tools. In promotional contexts, posters create images that captivate the public, encouraging them to respond and even engage with the advertised product. This study delves into the analysis of a film poster that sparked controversy in 2024, initially titled Kiblat and later renamed Thaghut. The primary issue addressed in this research is the semiotic analysis of the Kiblat/Thaghut film poster, examining the myths within the second-order sign system and exploring how these myths function as significant promotional media in media culture. The study employs Roland Barthes' semiotic theory, specifically his second-order sign system analysis, combined with Edmund Burke Feldman's basic design theory. A qualitative approach with a case study methodology is utilized, drawing data from visual materials of the poster and documents from the production house, Leo Pictures. The findings indicate that the Kiblat/Thaghut film poster displays religious symbols in a provocative manner, such as depicting a prayer scene facing the wrong direction. In the second-order sign analysis, the concept presented is "another qibla," with its signification being deviation/heretical movement in religion. The poster plays a pivotal role in promoting the film, with religious attributes providing a shocking value that prompts public response. The portrayal of religion and its controversial scenes serves as a consumption logic designed to elicit public reaction, particularly in Indonesia, where Islam is the majority religion.
