Abstract

This study was motivated by the rising use of smartphones among students; excessive use can lead to addiction and impact the educational process, particularly learning motivation. The study aimed to: 1) Determine the learning motivation levels of students addicted to smartphones prior to receiving group guidance services (pre-test). 2) Determine the learning motivation levels of students addicted to smartphones after receiving group guidance services (post-test). 3) Analyze the effectiveness of group guidance services in improving the learning motivation of students addicted to smartphones at SMAN 1 Linggo Sari Baganti. An experimental method was employed. The study population consisted of 35 students, with a sample of 12 students selected using purposive sampling a technique involving specific selection criteria. A Likert-scale questionnaire served as the research instrument, and the t-test was used for data analysis. The results showed that: 1) Before the group guidance intervention, students' smartphone addiction levels were high, while their learning motivation was in the "fairly high" category; 2) After the intervention, both smartphone addiction and learning motivation levels fell into the "low" category; 3) There was a significant difference in smartphone addiction and learning motivation levels between the pre-test and post-test stages. This study provides valuable insights for students, helping them modify or eliminate excessive smartphone usage habits. Furthermore, students demonstrated changes in learning behaviors, such as improved time management and concentration. Following this study, guidance counselors can utilize group guidance to address smartphone addiction and learning motivation issues, while the school can facilitate the necessary infrastructure and resources for guidance and counseling services.
