Abstract

The fast-growing trend of the buy now, pay later (BNPL) service may cause uncontrolled consumerism among youngsters due to the accessibility of the digital credit. This research seeks to analyze the influence of lifestyle on consumptive behavior where self-control is the mediating variable among the students of the Faculty of Economics and Business of Udayana University, who utilize Shopee PayLater service. The research was performed among the students of the Faculty of Economics and Business of Udayana University where 120 students were selected through the purposive sampling technique. The data were gathered through the questionnaire survey and analyzed using the path analysis. The results indicate that all relationships among the variables are statistically significant, with a significance value (Sig.) of 0.000 (< 0.05), meaning that all hypotheses are supported. Specifically, lifestyle has a positive effect on consumptive behaviour, with a beta coefficient of 1.02. Conversely, lifestyle has a negative effect on self-control, with a beta coefficient of -0.74. Furthermore, self-control has a negative effect on consumptive behaviour, with a beta coefficient of -1.20. It has been proved through the mediation analysis that self-control is a significant mediator having an indirect effect equal to 0.89. The coefficient of determination (R Square) value of the self-control variable is 0.776, while the R Square value of consumptive behavior is 0.892. It can be said on the basis of the above findings that both the factors of lifestyle and self-control together account for 89.2% of variance in the consumptive behavior of students, while the remaining 10.8% of the variance is accounted for by other factors.
