Abstract

The reliability of a diesel generator is essential to ensure a continuous electrical power supply and support ship operations. A decrease in cylinder compression pressure may lead to incomplete combustion, reduced engine efficiency, and increased operational failures. This study aims to analyze the factors causing compression leakage in cylinder number 3 of Diesel Generator No. 1 on KM Armada Segara, identify its effects on engine performance, and determine appropriate corrective actions. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach using a case study method. Data were collected through field observations, interviews with engine room personnel, documentation, and inspection of engine components, and were analyzed using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing techniques. The results indicate that the compression leakage was caused by worn piston rings, damaged exhaust valves, and worn valve seats, resulting in a compression pressure decrease to 18 MPa compared with the normal range of 22–24 MPa in the other cylinders. This condition reduced combustion efficiency and negatively affected diesel generator performance. The study concludes that periodic inspection and timely replacement of components exceeding allowable wear limits are essential to maintain the reliability and operational performance of diesel generators.
