Abstract

The deep-rooted patriarchal culture in Indonesia makes women seen as submissive and inferior to men, so they often receive unfair treatment in the society. Along with the increasing awareness of gender equality, women are starting to dare to choose the path of life they want, including in terms of marital status. The phenomenon of postponing marriage is increasingly widespread because of the awareness of what women will face when getting married in an environment with a patriarchal culture that is still inherent in the society. This can be seen through the increase in the number of unmarried women and the shift in the average age of marriage for women in Indonesia. Ironically, the result of patriarchal culture is still very much embedded in society, making unmarried women obtain a negative stigma from society, which is "perawan tua" as one of them. The purpose of this research is to find out how women who have never been married interpret the term "perawan tua" by society. This research uses a qualitative approach with phenomenological methods analyzed through interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) techniques. Interview techniques were used in collecting data for this study and analyzed using the data analysis technique by Smith et al. (2009). The results showed that unmarried women interpreted the term "perawan tua" as negative. However, participants did not internalize the term into themselves.

Abstract

Childfree is a phenomenon that has been popular since the 1970s and is becoming more common in a number of nations, including Asia. Childfree has recently gained popularity among Indonesians. As a patriarchal culture, the majority of Indonesians subscribe to pro-natalism, making childfree a taboo subject to discuss or even make a choice. Surprisingly, when stated by women, the decision to be childless is highly condemned by society. Meanwhile, when males express their intention to be childless, society tends to laud individuals involved. As a result, the researcher hopes to learn more about the factors that influence men's decisions to be childless in Indonesia through this research. As a data collection strategy, this study used an exploratory qualitative approach, employing interpretive phenomenology methodologies, and conducting interviews with four individuals. The findings revealed being childfree was selected based on both internal and environmental influences. The experiences of participants in choosing childfree marriage can then be viewed via symbolic interactionism theory by Herbert Blumer.

Abstract

Kegiatan PKM ini bertujuan untuk mencapai SDGs No. 5 (Kesetaraan Gender), SDGs No. 4 (Kualitas Pendidikan), dan SDGs No. 3 (Hidup Sehat & Sejahtera).

Abstract

Balinese people who are unable to produce male offspring use Nyentana, a matrilineal mating system. In the midst of patriarchal culture and a dense patrilineal kinship system, it is difficult for men to perform Nyentana marriage. The study intends to discover how Balinese men perceive Nyentana marriage as a type of matrilineal marriage. This is an exploratory qualitative study with a phenomenological approach, and data was gathered through direct interviews with four Balinese men who had performed Nyentana marriages. The findings revealed that the concept of patriarchal society was used, which stated that men were dominant and women were subordinate. According to the participants in this study, there is no clear distinction between patrilineal marriages in general and Nyentana marriages in particular; men remain the head of the family and exercise leadership in the indigenous community system. Men who have participated in Nyentana Marriage believe that this matrilineal marriage is widespread, particularly in the Tabanan region. Some participants also mentioned that this type of marriage is not permitted in all areas of Bali. Men who have participated in Nyentana mating believe this is normal because men continue to dominate and are encouraged by the customary system. It can be concluded that men who have participated in Nyentana marriage see no distinction between Nyentana marriage as a type of matrilineal marriage and patrilineal marriage in general.

Abstract

The trend of utilizing luxury brands among Generation Z in Indonesia is on the rise. The shifting landscape of priorities among young individuals in this evolving era often results in tertiary needs taking precedence as primary necessities. Consequently, a hedonistic mindset emerges when indulging in luxury brand consumption. Furthermore, the inclination towards specific luxury brands goes beyond mere consumption; it fosters the development of a brand-focused lifestyle among the youth. Hence, a research initiative was undertaken to elucidate how Generation Z perceives luxury brands. Employing an interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) within a constructivist framework, alongside a qualitative exploratory approach, the study aimed to uncover participants' interpretations of luxury brands. Data were acquired through interviews, subsequently subjected to analysis using methodologies outlined by Smith, Flowers, and Larkin. The research findings underscored that one of the catalysts for this phenomenon lies in Generation Z's aspiration for acknowledgment and acceptance within society. Financial, functional, social, and individual values collectively contribute to shaping the significance attached to luxury brands among this demographic. Generation Z holds the belief that social validation can be garnered by enhancing their standard of living or social status through the adoption of luxury brands, fostering hedonism and brand-conscious behavior.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the strategic role of bystander intervention and the utilization of digital media in the prevention of sexual violence. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach with Robert E. Stake’s case study method, the research involved five female participants with experience as responsive bystanders. It uncovers how female responsive bystanders utilize digital media not only to respond to sexual violence but also to build solidarity, disseminate public awareness, and document survivor experiences as part of prevention efforts. The findings indicate that although participants do not always follow every stage of the Bystander Intervention Process, they consistently demonstrate active engagement in preventing or responding to sexual violence through intervention strategies such as direct, distract, and delegate. Some factors, such as emotional proximity, personal experience, and perceived risks, influence the intervention undertaken. Significant challenges for bystanders include situational ambiguity, past trauma, and prevailing social norms. Conversely, social media is recognized as a strategic tool for fostering collective digital support, voicing survivor experiences, and providing valid forensic evidence. The pattern of micromobilization within digital movements strengthens public awareness regarding sexual violence issues. This study reinforces the complementary roles of bystanders and digital media in creating safe spaces and progressive social change.
