Abstract

This study is grounded in the importance of pragmatic research for understanding the meaning of utterances based on the context of language use, particularly in audiovisual media that convey educational values, such as animated films. The animated film Jabir ibn Hayyan was selected as the subject of study due to the dialogues between its characters, which embody moral and religious values, the spirit of seeking knowledge, and social interactions likely to showcase diverse forms of illocutionary speech acts. The study aims to describe the forms and functions of Searle’s illocutionary speech acts as they appear in the utterances of the main character in the film. Adopting a qualitative descriptive approach from a pragmatic perspective, the research utilized listening and transcription techniques; the film's dialogues were transcribed and analyzed according to John R. Searle’s classification of illocutionary speech acts. The findings revealed the presence of five forms of illocutionary speech acts—assertives (or representatives), directives, commissives, expressives, and declaratives—serving various functions, including affirming, questioning, commanding, promising, praising, expressing enthusiasm, making appointments, and issuing judgments. The study found that the direct, literal speech act was the most dominant form. Furthermore, the results demonstrated a diversity of illocutionary speech acts and their pragmatic functions within the film's dialogue, reflecting the multiplicity of communicative and educational intentions embodied by the characters and events. The study concludes that the dialogue in the animated film Jabir ibn Hayyan serves not only a communicative function but also acts as a means of character development and a vehicle for scientific values and social ethics; this contributes to the advancement of pragmatics and highlights the utility of educational animation in language learning.
