Abstract

This research initially attempts to determine characteristics and characterization of the characters; Clov, Hamm, Nagg, and Nell, as well as how it represented the concept of absurdity. The play involves a critical review and otherwise, more appropriately, a conception addressed toward the audience or reader. As a result, researcher chooses to utilize a moral-philosophical approach to conduct this research. As according Camus, absurdity cannot be fully investigated. It is only determined by utilizing the method for explaining the concept of absurdity. Several concepts are represented throughout the drama by the characters' acts, utterances, and thoughts. Those ideas include monotony routine, meaningless circumstances, and the end. Depending to Camus' theory of absurdity, those concepts might well be classified as a representation of such the absurdity concept. The author's condemnation on existence of humankind in the play script may be recognized by considering the perspective regarding Camus' absurdity concept as the characteristics and characterization of characters represents the absurdity concept.

Abstract

Semiotics and semantics are branches of linguistics. Semiotics is a science or method of analysis in studying signs and semantics is a science of meaning. The purposes of this study are to analyze Peirce's semiotic signs and understand the interpretation of the contextual meaning contained in the 9GAG memes containing the COVID-19 narrative. As a tool to analyze, the researcher uses Peirce's semiotic as main theory which consists of representamen, object, and interpretant, while in the semantic field, the researcher uses the supporting theory, namely the contextual meaning of Lyon to discuss each context in the words in the narrative in the meme. The objects used in this study were 30 memes containing the COVID-19 narrative originating from one of the largest online meme platforms, 9GAG. The meme object was chosen because many internet users use memes as a medium to express opinions about COVID-19. The form of the method used in this research is qualitative research. This form of research was chosen because it produces written descriptive data that explains the process of semiosis and the contextual meaning contained in 9GAG memes. For the result of this Semiotics analysis, researcher found on three semiotics signs, 30 data of qualisign, sinsign, index, and rheme. They become the most dominant element. Then, followed by 9 data of icon and 6 data of argument. Meanwhile, legisign, symbol, and dicent only found 1 data. In contextual meaning analysis, researcher found 19 data of context of person and becomes the most dominant types of contextual meaning on these memes above. Then, followed by 15 data of context of subject-matter, 7 data of context of mood, 3 data of context of time, 2 data of context of place, and 1 data of context of formality. The conclusion is each meme on this research has representamen, object, and interpretant then the narrative in it contains meaning about public opinion regarding life aspects affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Digital communication has reshaped how evaluations are expressed in public platforms, particularly on YouTube, where food reviews combine entertainment and judgment. However, limited attention has been given to how reviewers balance criticism and politeness in such contexts. This study aims to examine politeness strategies and mitigation devices used in food review videos by Nick DiGiovanni. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the study applies Brown Levinson’s politeness theory and Fraser’s mitigation framework to analyze evaluative utterances from selected videos published between 2024 and 2025. The findings reveal that negative politeness strategies are dominant and frequently combined with mitigation devices such as hedges, disclaimers, and parenthetical verbs. These features function to soften criticism, maintain audience engagement, and preserve the speaker’s credibility. Overall, the study shows that politeness and mitigation play a crucial role in shaping evaluative discourse in digital media.

Abstract

This study investigates the linguistic meanings embedded in motivational content shared on the @affirmations Instagram account by examining both denotative and connotative layers of meaning. Adopting a descriptive qualitative design, the data were collected through document analysis of selected visual posts containing distorted imagery and accompanying textual elements. The findings indicate that the @affirmations account strategically combines unconventional and distorted visual representations with motivational language to critically engage with and subvert the ideology of “toxic positivity” prevalent in digital culture. This interplay between visual distortion and linguistic expression produces a “digital uncanny” effect, which serves to question the societal pressure for constant positivity and perfection in online environments, while simultaneously reframing personal struggles as ironic and reflective social commentary. Unlike previous studies that primarily emphasize persuasive or commercial functions of digital content, this research focuses on the semiotic role of language in constructing meaning within subversive motivational posts. By applying Roland Barthes’ concept of myth, the study extends its analytical scope to the notion of the “digital uncanny,” demonstrating how linguistic and visual elements collaboratively operate to critique ideals of digital perfectionism. This approach contributes to the development of a more nuanced semiotic framework for understanding how language in digital spaces is used to deconstruct dominant social narratives. Consequently, the study offers significant implications for digital media studies, cultural sociology, and semiotics, while also providing practical insights for content creators, digital marketers, educators, and mental health practitioners in interpreting Gen-Z digital culture and evolving perceptions of online well-being.

Abstract

The research aims to analyze the flouting of conversational maxims in satirical tweets posted by Titania McGrath on X. Previous studies on maxim flouting have primarily focused on stand-up comedy, webtoons, and general online interactions, while the role of maxim flouting in ideological digital satire remains underexplored. To address this gap, this study investigates how conversational maxims are flouted in Titania McGrath’s tweets and how such flouting generates humor and sarcasm. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the study analyzes selected tweets through Grice’s (1975) Cooperative Principle, implicature theory, humor theory, and cyberpragmatics. The findings reveal that the Maxim of Quality is flouted most frequently through hyperbole, implausible claims, and verbal irony, while the other maxims contribute to ambiguity, incongruity, and parody. This research contributes to pragmatic research by demonstrating how maxim flouting functions as a key mechanism of digital satire in social media discourse.
